Trade Bait

And as far as Gallup is concerned, Cooper, though he plays hurt, does seem to get banged up a lot, when will one of those "bang ups" turn into half a season or such? Or become something that happens every few games. Pretty good bit of risk there.

As to Collins, he's only 28, seemed to have recovered from the hip surgery before the suspension. If I'm reading it right, his cap hit is over $15 million next year, which would make one think "Yikes, that's too high, Steele is playing well, better get rid of Collins". But also if I'm reading it right his dead cap is over $13 million. So it appears the Cowboys are between the proverbial rock and hard place. May not be any way to get rid of him except a trade, which has to be done by Nov 2nd, and I seriously doubt any team will take on that next year's salary.

So realistically Collins will be here next year, and Gallup will either be lost for no compensation or he'll have to be paid a lot of money to keep him.

But for me, the team seems to be gelling, improving the roster should always be a goal, but it has to be a good improvement, not just roster churning. At some point you have to "dance with who brought you" as Bum Phillips once said and keep the team together...
if collins returns, at that salary, I am pretty sure we will redo his contract.....

Say you get a 1st round offer for Collins right now. Say you refuse it and Collins gets injured and is out for the year. Definitely should have taken the offer.

These are the decisions GMs make. A lot of gambles and hunches. There are times to play it safe and times to gamble.
since we are playing the if game
say you get a first round offer for collins. say we take it. say smith gets injured. and we don't have a swing tackle and we put some guy (insert name) at LT and then offense struggles. dak gets hit and may be injured and we may make it to playoffs but probably lose.....but hey I got a first round pick in my pocket..

opportunity is now. you cash in. you don't pass it to look into the future....its not about draft picks. its about the strongest, deepest team making it to through the playoffs and when there is that opportunity you go for it. you don't gamble

That is the only way a trade would work, but the Cowboys don't even have the cap space to make such a sign-n-trade to work, so might as well forget about being able to trade Gallup.

If the Cowboys don't find a way to create room at the end of the season to retain him, Gallup is going to leave as an unrestricted free agent while the Cowboys will get nothing in return as compensation.

Sorry I buy into untradeable I have seen big mid season trades before. Again I'm not advocating any trade what I am saying is at the right price damn right I would trade almost any player but it has to be at my price.

I fully expect Gallup to return this season but again should someone offer a #1 for him then I take it, period. With Cowboys cap situation our draft picks on rookie deals becomes even more critical than before. So being in a situation with out cap and say 2 1st rd picks in hand would be big for this franchise.

I believe obtaining a good CB would be a fortuitous move for the Cowboys to make to bolster our defense. Hopefully, one might be available. The vulnerability in our passing defense could hopefully be lessened with such a move.
who? who is available....hypotheticals and position mentions with no names don't matter.

Unless I could absolutely rob someone I wouldn’t trade either
If this team wasn’t competitive I would think differently but we are competitive and we will have more injuries and reasons players aren’t availible
Collins coming off a suspension is probably not gonna bring any real value and unless the team knows something that is much worse than we do he will be the RT for years
Gallup is a very good player that we won’t be able to afford after the season but he is worth a lot to a team with a chance at the playoffs
If someone offered something crazy I’d listen but I’m not taking a 3rd which is probably his value considering his contract situation
I wouldn’t even take a second unless it was gonna be a very high second
when gallup leaves, depending on size of contract we could get a 3rd in return. worse case a 4th.

so is dropping down one round vs. having gallup to make a run.....its an easy decision.

Gallup could renege on that trade and refuse to sign it if it doesn't pay him what he feels is a fair price for his services, especially since he knows he's about to become an unrestricted free agent by the end of this season.

Sell high, buy low. Collins’ price is maybe the highest it will be right now. There are teams desperate for starting OT talent right now.

The team is at a crossroad with the starting OT position. Steele’s arrow is pointing up, Collins down. Who starts? Do you reward Collins for his abhorrent behavior these past two years and gift him the starting position? Or do you reward Steele for his hard work and improvement? Do you stop the progress of Steele for a lying drug addict who quit on the team last year and who last played well in 2019?

What is the message you want to send to your team? What is the culture of the team? These questions are much more important to the team than depth right now. We are talking about the heart and soul of a team.

Steele or Collins? Which one starts. This question must be answered soon and not swept under the carpet with some BS explanation.

Reward Steele or allow Collins to continue his BS shenanigans? The team is watching.

Collins quit on the team, he quit on his teammates, he quit on his friends, he quit on the fans. He put drugs above football. You want to reward that? You want to keep that? You want more of that from Collins? You want similar behavior from other stars down the line?

When is enough enough?

Gallup is a different story. He is a good player who does all the right things and just got injured. He is the type of player you want to keep. So is Wilson. Might not be able to keep both after this year. Tough decision.

Stealers got rid of Antonio Brown. Similar situation with Collins.
who is your swing tackle if steele or Smith go down?

So what happens after Collins and Gallup come back? As good as Terrance Steel and Cedrick Wilson are playing right now the Cowboys might want to consider moving on from L'el Collins and Michael Gallup. You could get some really good players for these guys or even better a couple of really high draft picks. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Cowboys pull off a move for one or even both of these guys.
This season just got started and with 17 games this year it's going to be a grind to get to the finish line. Cooper is always dealing with some type of little injury and trading Gallup is not the best idea at this time. As for Collins, everyone should drop to a knee and thank GOD that we have him waiting in the wings..........

OL this year has been healthy but would not risk losing Collins after the suspension. As for Gallup my view is if someone shows interest and willing to pay a big price for him great if not I would rather see him with the Cowboys making plays.
What are Gallups stats which should garner a high draft pic in trade.

Like I said, there are more important things than depth right now with Collins. Which one starts? Collins would be very expensive depth. Get what you can for him now.

I assume you are leaving Collins as the backup going forward, right? Or are you starting Collins and benching Steele? Got to make the call next week. Trade deadline coming up in 2 or 3 weeks.

The Cowboys have Nsehke, Knight, Farniok, and Ball. Not like the cupboard is bare.
Collins starts hands down. I know we are happy with Steele, but his no where close to collins. he gets a lot of help. watch the games and you will see how much help he is getting from the TEs....

and none of the ones you names give me any level of comfort if they have to play.....the cupboard is bare

Imo your OP definitely has strong support for either trading or keeping them.
Both players have good film that other teams have seen.

Collins, as an o linemen, could "possibly" fetch a first but for sure a second I think.

These are hard decisions to be made calculating cost, risk AND reward.

I have mixed or fence sitting opinions on these guys based on what if/fear of injury scenarios so my gut is to keep them for this year's all in run at a trophy.

While I also have that amateur GM side to me that would love high picks for both instead of nothing or possibly overpaying to keep, just maybe this year it is best to stand pat with what we've got.

Injuries are bound to happen.

That's your argument?? 12 personal huh, well that 12 personal seems to be in the defensive secondary a lot, I don't know about you but I see Schultz and Jarwin down the field involved in the pass pattern maybe I've been watching the wrong game, 12 personal my ***!
schultz maybe. not so much jarwin. Steele is getting a lot of help on the run game. he is not as good or powerful as Collins. he is decent in pass protection, but still gets a lot of help....he has been a good surprise. gives us comfort that if necessary, he can step in and hold the fort....but schedule is about to get tougher, we need to make playoff run. its time to try and cash in, not plan for next year in the middle of the season. and if we want to, we can make a trade in off season with collins.

who on carolina?

donte jackson. don't see it happening, not advocating it, just something i saw floating around. he's on the last year of his deal and they just drafted horn and traded for gilmore and henderson. they're also in desperate need of OL help

Nsekhe, Knight, Farniok, and Ball.
OMG. you are making me cry....we saw knight last year. he sucked. ball is a rookie and barely made the team. farnoik struggled mightily in preseason....and Nsekhe is a journey man.

and why trade collins now? in the middle of the season. why not do it after the season? if Collins is so good that he might fetch a 1st, why not keep him and make a run. he is good right? and if he is not good, then he wouldn't fetch much, same as after the season.....

you logic makes no sense.

simple question is there any offer that a team could make that you would be willing to trade say Gallup? Much like some say they don't understand why anyone would want to trade a player like Gallup I question is there a offer you could not turn down? For me is for instance Pitt says they will offer up a #1 for Gallup I would take it. I figure everyone has a price
if pitt does that...I might..... if bills offer it, I have to think a little while and probably not.

but question is which combination makes offense better Cooper, Gallup, CD or Cooper, CD, Wilson....specially if you are trying to make a post season run.
