I could see a team paying a 5th rounder. I probably wouldn't do it. He's the best backup in the league, keep him.

Trading Orton for a pick makes too much sense, so likely does not happen. Also packaging Orton/players/picks for a starter at RB, OG or DL.

No team is going without a backup QB. Orton may be gone after this season who knows but Dallas would be foolish to get rid of him

a late round draft pick is better than nothing, because with Dallas 31 million over the cap next year, Orton is getting cut after the season

The Cowboys can fix their cap situation by restructuring deals. I saw an article on ESPN Dallas that calculated it. The only Cowboys that are getting cut next year are Miles Austin, Mackenzy Bernadeau, and maybe Doug Free if the staff thinks Jermey Parnell can play. Orton is staying. Alex Tanney is NOT ready to be a number two QB.

We really need to consider drafting a QB early in next years draft. It's time to start getting serious about the future of the position.

That's not happening until Romo is very close to the end. Can you imagine the media backlash if the Cowboys drafted a QB early? Can you imagine the chants for the rookie when Romo tosses his first interception in 2014? This team and Romo just doesn't need that now. This isn't like 2005 when Green Bay took Aaron Rodgers when Brett Favre was still there.

I disagree, I think that Romo is getting close to the end, and is probably only here for another couple of years. It's never too early to start planning for the future at the most important position in sports.

I think that the guy you were referring to originally was being facetious. .
I'd hope so, but his signature says:

"By the end of 2014 Romo will not be starting for the cowboys and the most popular phrase on the board will be..."see I knew we shouldn't have signed him to that big contract""

Haha, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think restructuring contracts year after year as if it's an accounting correction is laughable, at some point the bill comes due for those restructuring, see Oakland Raiders who have 50 million in dead money on their cap this year from restructuring contracts in recent years...You have to remember just because you cut players because of the salary cap, Dallas still needs to replace those players for those spots on the roster that you cut and that costs money, Dallas should of gutted the team a couple of years ago, as Indy did, see the difference between where Indy is and Dallas is.......the window for this team was closed a couple of years ago but Jerry doesn't accepts that, the core is aging and highly overpaid and Jerry over pays for aging players year after year, reworking their contracts to push their money down the road will get you in trouble and Dallas is in trouble for the next couple of years...and by then Witten, Ware and Romo etc will be nothing but more dead money against the cap when they're cut....last three years, 6-10,8-8, 8-8, this year 4-3 in a horrible division, looks more of the same to me, 8-8 season and a mediocre football team for some time and no long term plan, just Jerry Jones short sighted failed belief

If we turn in the same 8-8 type of season, or squeak into the playoffs and get destroyed, I'm all for gutting the team after this season, or at very least getting rid of some of the aging players with big contracts, and minimum distribution.

No team would trade for Orton. Not saying he's not a capable backup, but if you think you have serious aspirations for the playoffs and Kyle Orton is an option.....you're not making the playoffs. There's 0 market for Orton and there's no need to discuss this.

Romo prob plays another 5 or 6 years.
