The more I hear about our cap situation and knowing we have new contracts for Newman and Ware coming up, I wonder if we could even trade for players like DHall and RWilliams since they will need a new contract and big money. We cannot trade for them unless an extention is worked out first.

We need to use the draft to get our players

I agree......I do not want Hall and I'm not too crazy about Williams.

we have plenty of cap room and several ways to shake money free in a responsible manner.

talk radio makes a big issue out of the salary cap but frankly now that teams have a solid understanding of managing the cap and a philosophy of how they will do so, we aren't going to see anyone in legitimate "cap hell" anymore -- most teams are going to be able to sign whomever they care to.

It's tough to manage the cap unless some of your starters are on rookie deals.

We need to fill a few holes with youth. LG, MLB are a start.

Though Akin is cheap.

Need guys like Ferguson to free up space.

If we trade for Hall we will regret it for years. IMO

I'm talking about the Memphis - Tennessee showdown in college basketball.

I think any 'future' contract extensions would be weighed against contracts expected to be coming off the cap in the next few years.

For every long-term Ken Hamlin extension, I foresee a Roy Williams (S) contract coming off the books.

For every future cornerback contract coming up, I foresee an Anthony Henry contract coming off the books.

Ware's extension will be coming up, while Ellis and Carpenter's contracts will be coming off.

If the Cowboys were to trade for Detroit's Roy Williams, his contract could take the place of Terry Glenn's in a manner of speaking.

Obviously, it's not as squeaky clean as my examples illustrate, but I think that it gives a rough idea toward future-thinking.

I can only see us making moves for guys like Hall and Williams, together, if Jerry Jones is completely, 100%, convinced that there will be no cap in a couple of years to where he can really back load the deals.
