I agree with what you're saying, its a valid point, but the bigger issue is that this method of team building simply isn't a realistic way to have success. Having to pass up on higher end talent because you can't go get a few 3rd wave free agents so you HAVE to hit on multiple draft picks as plug and play starters year after year is a horrible way to run your football team. The risk of going and trading away a bunch of prime picks to chase an elite talent for this team is higher than most teams. If Hunter doesn't turn into a stud, the downside is larger than for other teams.
Why? Because our franchise refuses to use FA like other teams. They have openly admitted they do not use FA to get starters or high level players. Those players come from the draft. So when your PRIME means of adding players that can fill starting roles and make large impacts is solely the draft, you can't be trading away a mix of top picks over a couple years.
You just can't. Would I like Hunter? Sure. Would I run to the desk with the card if he were there at 12? Absolutely. Should we trade 12, our 2nd, next year's 1st and maybe a third this year or next year? Nope. We don't have the luxury. We need those picks to try to land players that can fill immediate holes. One CB/WR (and we aren't even sure what position he will be best suited for in the NFL) doesn't change the trajectory of this franchise given how we are built.
Personally I'm not sure that Hunter is the guy I would gamble on trading up that high for, but I absolutely hate that we will never be in a position to go grab a guy like that because the front office refuses to spend in free agency.
