Trading up for Travis Hunter?

The risk of going and trading away a bunch of prime picks to chase an elite talent for this team is higher than most teams. If Hunter doesn't turn into a stud, the downside is larger than for other teams.

Why? Because our franchise refuses to use FA like other teams. They have openly admitted they do not use FA to get starters or high level players. Those players come from the draft. So when your PRIME means of adding players that can fill starting roles and make large impacts is solely the draft, you can't be trading away a mix of top picks over a couple years.

You just can't. Would I like Hunter? Sure. Would I run to the desk with the card if he were there at 12? Absolutely. Should we trade 12, our 2nd, next year's 1st and maybe a third this year or next year? Nope. We don't have the luxury. We need those picks to try to land players that can fill immediate holes. One CB/WR (and we aren't even sure what position he will be best suited for in the NFL) doesn't change the trajectory of this franchise given how we are built.
I agree with what you're saying, its a valid point, but the bigger issue is that this method of team building simply isn't a realistic way to have success. Having to pass up on higher end talent because you can't go get a few 3rd wave free agents so you HAVE to hit on multiple draft picks as plug and play starters year after year is a horrible way to run your football team.

Personally I'm not sure that Hunter is the guy I would gamble on trading up that high for, but I absolutely hate that we will never be in a position to go grab a guy like that because the front office refuses to spend in free agency.

Saved me a lot of typing. I had the cost about the same as you do….1st and 2nd this year, 1st and 3rd next year.

There’s damn good chance next years are very high picks. Imagine suffering through what next season could very realistically be and not even having the picks as a consolation.

They are conservative to a serious fault, and after operating that way for so long, turning around and doing a deal like this would not only be monumentally dumb, but would likely bury this franchise.

Many agree Hunter is the best prospect in the draft and is a special talent in a class that doesn’t have many. He plays at two valued positions in which the Cowboys have needs at. Playing both is unrealistic but doesn’t mean he cannot get a package on the other side of the football.

If the cost isn’t franchise changing, the team needs to consider such a move.
I'd prefer Carter or Graham if we traded up. They will make it less important who you have at corner.

Love the player, but the size concerns me plus I'm not giving up draft picks when we don't have near enough to fix holes as it is. I agree with you.
Lipstick on a pig. Bandaid on a gaping wound.

CB is not anywhere near as big a problem as DT.

There are some warts with both of those players, where I don't see any with Hunter. Graham is now considered a 3T only with short arms, Carter is injured and has just 1 season playing edge.

That's true. Both positions are woefully inadequate for us. To your point, we gonna roll with Justin Rogers and. a Mazi rotation at dt? Holy hell..

Hate to say it, but after they resigned Osa I don't think they will draft a high DT. I agree with you, but cannot see them going that direction based on their history.
