Trash Talking

LOL...grumpy old guy right here.
Not grumpy at all DD. There's simply no point to trash talk.

Give me a Marion Barber silent assassin over the world's best trash talker. It is pointless.

I'll take Marion Barber aswell but IMO there is nothing wrong with some good'ol trash talking.

:D

I love the trash talking. I don’t like to see people all goody goody with each other before a game or fight. And it’s not pointless, it serves a purpose. It can motivate or intimidate.

Does Namath's prediction count as trash talking? It was definitely bulletin board material, but that's not necessarily the same thing. It sure added to the appeal of that game, both before and after it was played.

You know, they call it trash for a reason. Because it isn't worth anything. I don't mind a small amount of "trash." I certainly have celebrated Jimmy's 3 inch high letters jab many times. I don't like it because if it backfires you look stupid.

It bothers me a whole lot less than useless taunts though. Nothing is more annoying that some guy celebrating a tackle after a 4 yard gain like he did something amazing. It's even worse if the score is pointing the other way.

As a coach I would hate it. One of my players did it, he'd get fined. Quietly, behind closed doors, but there would be a fine. I don't like giving a team something that would motivate them.

I like Patrick Crayton a lot as a player, but I wish he would shut the hell up about the other team. Focus on what you do rather than what you want to say.

Right, that's more what I had in mind. Saying you hate the other team isn't really trash talk IMO. I was thinking more of Fred Smoot or Deangelo Hall running their mouths all game even as they get lit up time after time.

Of course, I don't think it's cool when Ben Rapelisberger talks trash about Romo before the game by saying "he brings it on himself" (publicity), either.

But a good old "We don't like them and they don't like us" is fine by me.

Does anyone else think football would be better off with more trash talking from the players? I mean it has mass apeal in other sports such as Boxing and MMA. I know we sure did a bunch when we were playing ball in the park. Heck, think about how much is done by the fans.

Much like guaranteeing a win, it loses it's effect if it's used too often. Joe Namath guaraneeing a win meant something -- when Ochocinco says it these days, it just sounds ******** and pointless.

That's good stuff, right there. :laugh2:

I think Chad is pretty funny and entertaining. Just the way he talks I guess.

I agree completely re: the in game taunting. Even Irvin's first-down gestures used to drive me nuts. Making an *** of yourself on a big hit 15 yards beyond the LoS in a game you're losing is just embarrassing.

It's the NFL, not the WWE.

Nothing looks stupider than someone who talks a bunch of trash and then gets his butt handed to him.

Trash talking is a total lack of class as far as I'm concerned. It's a sign up complete disrespect for the other player and team.

A couple of years ago there was a football game being played here in town. It was just some young adults getting together to have a good time. Well, there was a lot of trash being slung at each other all game long. This was a pretty big game so there were a lot of folks there w/ kids n such.

So because of feeling disrespected, one of the players of the losing team went to his truck after the game and he and his friend came crusing through and sprayed the whole place w/ bullets, hitting a few folks and children in the process.

You see where this can escalate? Why on earth would we want professionals to who kids look up to to do these kinds of things?

It's the wrong signal to send to our children. Everything is about sportsmanship, as it should be.

I may be out of bounds here but there are some serious issues w/ young America these days. Parents who encourage this nonsense are only embolding the behavior in our young.

It sickens me.

If you can't be professional in a GAME, then where does it stop? Does it just stop when you leave the field of play? Does it stop when you start smackin at the office and lose your job?

Everything begins w/ respect and I wish players would consider that when getting in the face of the other team.

Act like you have been there.

Totally agree, I am more of the Jimmy Johnson attitude, keep your mouth shut and play, keep your head in the game at hand. Stay focused. If your mouthing off, you generally get bit back. Remember a year or so ago when Crayton ran his mouth off about playing the Patriots for a rematch in the superbowl.

Also, mouthing off is bulletin board material. I am not sure how old you are, but years ago, a wreath was given to Harvey Martin from supposedly the Commanders. I am sure that Hostile could fill in more details on that. (Reports later came in that either some Dallas Cowboy or staff sent the wreath to Harvey Martin and not the Commanders) but that did the trick. Harvey Martin was fired up for that game, and killed the Commanders. After the game, he took the wreath back to Commanders locker at texas stadium, opened the door and threw the wreath back at the Commanders.

You do all your talking on the field, then after the game, you can tell those other players how you feel, but you play the game focused.

The same Jimmy Johnson that guaranteed we'd beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship?

I hate the Giants.

I hate the Giants.

I hate the Giants.

I hate the Giants.

Oh, no. Brandon Jacobs found out.

I hate the Giants.

I hate the Giants.

You get the picture.

no its only poor sportsmanship if after you lose you dont shake hands and say good game. its like boxing, they trash talk before they fight then afterwards they shake hands and hug. i have no problem with trash talking. it hypes up a big game.

Which NFC Championship, we did beat the 49ers in the championship in candlestick park. The year we lost to the 49ers in candlestick, Jimmy Johnson wasnt the head coach, that was 94, remember Jerry Jones and Jimmy had just spllit up after 93.

The head coach can talk sometimes, because like Jimmy Johnson was doing, when he said in 3 inch words we will win, he was trying to take pressure off of the players, loosen them up a little bit. So, in reality he was showing confidence in his players.

The players are the ones that have to produce on the field. Its the coaches job to get the players ready to play with a great game plan. Players play on the field not the coaches.
