Wasn't it Mayock who called him a 3rd-5th Round talent? Way to go buddy, keep fighting the good fight.

Hopefully we can find more 5th Round talent with our first this year.

Good example of the value of a trade down.
We got both Frederick and Williams for our 1st round pick just by understanding value-based drafting.
I'm assuming Will McClay deserves some credit there, but probably a group effort.

Not that I. Blame SF for making the trade. They wanted Eric Reed there and got the now Pro Bowl safety.

Would you be happy if we lost out on Frederick for the sake of TWill?

Trading back can be risky unless there are more rated players than picks

There is something about him that resembles you. I just cannot put my finger on what it is...

Of course....goes without saying..IMO.

In this case we had enough players grouped with Freddy that the risk was neutralized. There is no way they would have taken him at 18.

That would not have been the case with Martin last year. I think he was rated much higher that TFred was.

Hindsight has everyone saying he was great pick though.
The trade worked out but then we proved there was luck involved b/c we then proceeded to take Escobar ahead of Lacy, LeVeon Bell, Jamie Collins, Larry Warford, etc.

Yep. Just because someone was a good player doesn't mean they were worth the draft pick. The draft is all about value. Tom Brady was a 6th rounder. That doesn't mean you're a good GM if you would have spent the #1 overall pick on Brady. That would have been an awful move considering his draft status.

I thought it was smart to take him where we did. Kiper, while I consider him a great draft analyst, STILL seems dead set on the fact Frederick would have been there late in the second. He seems to not take into account how that draft changed with lineman flying off the board, it shook things up. You then had rumors that the Ravens were interested in Frederick as well.

At 31 (Honestly, you might as well just consider it a second round pick as that point) was a perfect spot to select Frederick. Now, our next pick with Escobar? Yeah, not so much. It had nothing to do with the position, people need to accept the fact that Witten is not going to be here forever, it's the fact that it was Escobar that we chose from all other TE's.

That is a great point about the RBs and Escobar.

My point is that if they had taken TFred at 18 and TWill in the second instead of Escobar this place would have exploded, but it would have been a good move.

You can't be tied to "rounds" or value if you really like a player. I would rather overpay and get the right players than wait or trade back and miss out.

Well if Will gets the credit for this, he also needs the blame for the terrible pick of Escobar with our 2nd rounder that same year. He can't even see the field.

and i had to go be born in austin, tx. where getting your name on a sign usually means that while you've done some great things to get there, you've died now.
