Trevor Penning

why don’t you like him? I want a nasty OL at 24
I didn't say what I really meant.

I don't know anything about Penning that I didn't learn this week but what I know tells me he won't be available at #24, and that's cool cuz I hadn't been counting him among the 23 until he blew up in Indi and was happy to see him push another player down. I'd also be happy if he's the guy. Interesting draft. I usually have my heart set on a couple of players. This year there's about a dozen.

I would love to see him drafted here. Still think he can pan out as a starter at LT-with proper coaching and willingness to learn(duh).
Get him in here, groom him behind Smith. See how soon he could take over, cause odds are he would start at some point in 22.

I would like him to start inside and then eventually move outside to either tackle spot.

I thought that as well, but I would rather see him gain reps in practice/PS working on his footwork as a LT. Maybe he's talented enough to switch to guard then to LT in a year or so like Tunsil did in Miami, but IMO Tunsil was better athletically and was more sound as a prospect for the LT spot than Penning is.

Either way, I think Penning at LG would be great short term.

I'm a Penning fan.

I don't really hold the Combine in high regard for OLs... it doesn't translate very cleanly. Look for example at Alex Leatherwood. Crushed the Combine, played down to his tape. Of course Penning smashed every analytics threshold that does work, but I don't think that changes his evaluation a lot overall.

I think he's a day 1 starting guard for any team, cause he's just too strong to not handle NFL DTs. And once he handles the ramp up to NFL speed, I could see him playing there for the next 10 years. I don't think he's a tackle, but that door is open if you want to try that. But guard... absolutely.

But the question becomes ..

Is Penning that good at 24 at guard, to not pass up? Or can you find a solid guard later (Salyer, Kinnard, Ingram)

People were saying the same thing in 2014. "Why did we draft Zack Martin #14, we could have traded down and still got Xavier Su'a'Filo."

Kinnard's got a second round grade from me, Penning's got a first. If I have neck and neck grades with say Penning and a similarly graded defender, maybe OL depth becomes a tiebreaker between them. But I'm not going to just cross Penning's name out because worse players are available later... that's the same with every position.

I think Penning could be a Pro Bowl caliber player at LG.

I saw the draft show on the Fan and they said he is top 15? Really? I mean I thought 20ish to 30 was his range.

Would take him in a heartbeat. My one concern is if he starts inside - isn't 6'7" a little tall for a guard ?
Love his disposition.
Perfect start to the draft -
Round 1 - Penning G/T
Round 2 - Travis Jones DT.
Give me that start, you can have wh!tever you want after that, LBer, WR, TE, DE in any order ...

Agree with above post…is Penning really a shoe in for LG? No experience and 6’7….not saying he can’t do it, but I also don’t see how it’s a sure thing. Low man tends to win inside, there’s a good amount of DT’s that could be a tough task for a guy built like Penning

With that said, I think any team they drafts Penning will have a good staring RT for the foreseeable future

I would do the same path as Flozel Adams. Start him inside and then kick him to Tackle after some development. Penning at Guard would create a consistent push and good luck of getting through his anchor. He is on my short list at 24 with a few others.

Don't think Penning makes it to 24.

But Faalele likely there for Cowboys in 2nd.

Raimann grades out the same and has good movement. He will need some development though. He's strong with 30 reps on the bench press.

Strengths
  • Additional improvement likely imminent given traits.
  • Former tight end with enticing movement talent.
  • Took the coaching and developed at a rapid rate.
  • Can fly up to challenging second-level cutoffs.
  • Capable of making clean work-up blocks to linebackers.
  • Keeps feet connected with his pads.
  • Glides out and finds his work in the screen game.
  • Has natural quickness to set out to NFL edge speed as a pro.
  • Pass slides are well-balanced and consistent.
  • Rides rushers around the arc with agile feet.
  • Stalls inside moves with hip torque and rare recovery twitch.
  • Will find his anchor after initial bull-rush.
  • Sinks in hands and mirrors rusher through the whistle.

Bugler has him upper teens I believe.

Broaddus stated that the Cowboys will pick an interior linemen with the 24th pick that has a hole in their game. I am assuming he believes the pick will be Linderbam, Green, or Zion Johnson. It’s about protecting Dak and getting the running game back on track.

That my #1 priority this offseason to fix the run game, but with this team about to move on from both Cooper & DLaw you would think those needs are as high as fixing the interior of the OL. I have questions about Linderbaum but I would be happy with any of the 3 you mentioned.
