if they count against the 53 then how is that any different than it has been the past 100 years?
They can dress for the game and play in an emergency but not count against the gameday active 46.

This happens all the time in the business world. Not sure if matters if it is a blue or white collar job. Many will accept it as long as they are being compensated. They may not like it but they will take the couple extra days of pay and health coverage.
Yeah, I've read where people were held on to train their replacements.

I have been put in that situation. A new company buys the company you work for. You are offered "stay pay" and "retention bonus" if you stay until the end. Typically it is more money than your current salary because they know there has to be enough of an incentive for you stay and not leave for another job. One of the jobs I was paid my current salary and received both stay pay and retention bonus and when they added my banked PTO hours, my last day they cut me a check for over 6 months of salary. That was in addition to the salary they are were paying while I stayed to help with the transition. I had another job lined up the following Monday so it worked out for me.
