The Eagles are taking a big risk going from a quarterback who had a Pro Bowl season to a quarterback who has thrown fewer than 150 passes in his career.

What is the ONLY time since the NFL-AFL merger that a playoff team with a quarterback who made the Pro Bowl that season has switched to a quarterback with fewer than 150 career pass attempts and then returned to the playoffs the next season with that new quarterback?

Cowboys with White?

Staubach taking over from Morton? Just taking a wild guess.

The Pats? Bledsoe to Brady?

Edit NVM...that doesn't even qualify due to injury.

Too easy, huh?

You are correct. White had only 103 career attempts when he took over in 1980 after Staubach retired following a playoff season in which he made the Pro Bowl. The Cowboys then went 12-4 with White.

Every other playoff team since the merger (and possibly before that) that went from a Pro Bowl quarterback to an inexperienced one has failed to make the playoffs.

I misread the question. :bang2:

I was going to say Packers Aaron Rodgers but they didnt make the playoffs in 08.

Some logic and some guessing. I knew White/Staubach fit the bill but was a bit unsure about Morton/Staubach.

Morton never made a Pro Bowl.

That's pretty sad. He had a very good season in 1981 with the Broncos.

A very nice man but I hated him as our QB. He was a better player after he left Dallas.

That is what I was unsure of and the fact the merger took place in 1970 so I was a bit unclear if they fit the bill

Morton was a very good passer if you gave him time but was easily rattled when dealing with pressure.

He had a great arm but had a tendency to throw high when under pressure.

Just think: had we won Super V, the Staubach era may have never gotten off the ground. Had we beat the Colts, Landry probably would have stuck with Morton in '71 through thick and thin. After all, he would have earned it.

Morton was a better QB in Dallas than he was elsewhere. Morton was similar to Danny White. Both were very good, but they weren't Staubach.

73.52 for career
75.60 during time in Dallas(1965-1974)
72.42 everywhere else.

The league average for QB rating was 65.60 during the time span Morton played in Dallas. That means Morton was 15.2% better than the league average. Danny White was 13.2% better than the league average during his Cowboy career(81.7 to 72.2). Don Meredith was 12.7% better(74.8 to 66.4). Roger Staubach was 26.9% better(83.4 to 65.7)

One caveat I just thought of regarding the transition from Staubach to White is that White threw 350 passes in the World Football League before he came to Dallas. So he actually had 453 professional pass attempts before taking over for Staubach.

That means that, since the merger (and possibly in NFL history), no quarterback with fewer than 150 professional pass attempts has led his team to the playoffs after taking over a playoff team whose quarterback made the Pro Bowl the previous season. Kolb has 130 pass attempts in his pro career.
