I think he knew it was raining and conditions were rip for a turnover, and remembering what happened in the Rams game, I think he didn't want to make a mistake.
The mistake was taking a taking a knee. Why not just fair catch the ball?

He caught it at the 7 yard line. Fair catch would of put us in worse field position.
I'm not suggesting fair catching the ball as the correct course of action. If he was just going to take a knee he should have just let the ball go and take the touch back?

That was a kickoff. If he let that ball (which was a pooch kick - hung in the air) hit the ground it would have been live and easily recovered by the skins.

Coaches told him to get what he could and down it. He had no blocking because the hands team was out there for an onside kick.

That taking a knee after catching the ball was totally void of aggression. He just didn't want to be tackled.
That taking a knee was on the kickoff, not a punt, and I'm not sure it was a bad thing.
10 of his teammates were up on the Washington side of the 50 expecting an onsides kick. He had no friends back there...none. Yes, he could have gained another 10 yards, but suppose someone strips him of the ball; now the Skins walk into the end zone for the go-ahead TD with no Cowboys back there to stop them.

It looked weird, and I trust the coaches if it was dumb, but he avoided the worst thing that could happen, and a few more yards weren't going to make any difference.

I think Garrett's comment was in reference to not catching two punts that bounced us way back in our own end.

So catch it a run it as far as you can. Don't just give yourself up by taking a knee.
