I have always felt that Otto Graham doesn't get enough credit in these arguments. Ten years played, ten championship game appearances, seven championships. He was also the all time leader in passing rating (looked at retroactively, of course, as that formula didn't get invented until 1973) for the time that he played, and is still 16th all time (ahead of such luminaries as Johnny Unitas, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Roger Staubach, John Elway, Troy Aikman and Dan Fouts). He also played with a much bigger football than is used now, did not play with a facemask, did not have the liberal rules protecting QBs in the pocket and had to throw to receivers who could be jammed all over the field.

I'm just laughing at the notion that the QB position steadily advanced until the 1980s-1990s... THEN STOPPED.

Somehow, amazingly, QBs haven't gotten any better over the last 30 years!

I guess Morten Andersen would make 100% of his FG attempts if he played today, right? LOL.

Joe Cool was the best QB in the clutch I had ever seen, save for Roger Staubach. After the hit by Leonard Marshall in 1990 Championship game he wasnt the same but still led the Chiefs to the playoffs in 1993. People say he was surrounded by great players and a system, but no one was saying that in 1981 when he led them to their first SB. I hate the Niners with a passion but he and Ronnie Lott were fun to watch.

Great listen. I still think Steve Young was the greatest of all time and I think that Favre was/is one of the most overrated of all time. Young was mobile, accurate, smart as a whip..and damned durable. Had he be anointed a starter earlier in his career, I think he would be considered amongst the best ever. Favre. Blah. Montana was cool and poised but he was a system QB and really in the right place at the right time. Ive always felt he has been the most over rated player in the history of the NFL. Im not saying he wasnt good, just not the greatest of all time. The ring argument is weak. Weak for Joe, just like it is for E-Lie. Rings only tell part of the story.

Many posters here could have hit Jerry Rice on a 7 yd slant and watched as he ran for 40-50+ yds. Just sayn'

Put most or any recent QB behind the team that Romo has had to deal with and their success would be about where Romo's is right now.

funny, how did Arron Rogers come up anyway?... he's not even in my top 5 QB's...
with the way football is played these days... you see how the passing percentages have soared with all the new rules.... can't touch the receivers, can't hit the qbs....... keep the players safe, but it was a different game.... receivers constantly had watch for lott over the middle... and qb's were cheap shot-ed every play....

You're right. Overall I think there are 2-4 more high level QBs playing although I haven't done the math with the additional teams to see if that means a greater proportion.

My barber's more than decade younger than I am. He is one of the biggest New England Patriots fans anyone would ever meet. We get into the greatest ever quarterback conversation often. He pushes the Tom Brady argument and I tell him I respect his opinion. But he asks for my input because knowing I have watched the NFL since the mid-70s. I always say Joe Montana and usually reminisce not only what I saw him do as a pro but also what he did in college. The way he led Notre Dame back to beat Houston in the '79 Cotton Bowl still gives me chills, but more so because of his impact than that brutally cold game. That son of a gun was as sick as a dog that game. Some of the plays he made were legendary. The talent was apparent. I still cannot fathom how he dropped out of the first round.

I hated Montana's guts, just like I did Terry Bradshaw's. But even my personal animosity never stopped me from respecting him as the greatest I have ever seen. Just my two cents.
