For those who may believe that a quarterback's stats tell the whole story of their value:

.

This is leadership.

Thanks for posting this. This was the beginning of the end. Jimmy was the culture because he created it.
Jerry thought 500 guys could coach the Cowboys to a SB. He was wrong then and 28 years later he is still wrong.

It’s his ego which is preventing this organization from success. The only way for it to change is to have fans not show up. We need the Saints behavior of the 80’s

They need to show up with bags on their head, with the "28 years" written on them, and the ones facing west, need to have sunglasses on. :muttley:

After the 1994 season, Switzer's first, when the Cowboys lost to the 49ers in the NFC championship game, I nicknamed Switzer "Coach 501".

Its hard to be a leader before you walk the walk. Troy became MORE of a leader after he had a ring. Until you have been to the 'promised land', nobody wants to listen to your thoughts of how to get there. The cowboy locker room isn't listening to Dak b/c he hasn't won anything. Sure he can get up there and make impassioned speeches but nobody is inspired or moved by them.

The crazy thing is it was even more than that. The Cowboys FO ( Jerry) were so unprepared for FA to kick in that they did practically nothing. The also had a terrible draft but did get Larry Allen. Broken clock right syndrome there.
If you have seen the NFL films of the 93 SB, Jimmy was recruiting Deion to Dallas. Imagine that happening... The script would have turned and they for sure win 4 in a row.
Jimmy had the league in the palm of his hands. I have never heard of a coaching leaving after back to back SB's. I still cannot figure out why that had to happen.
Even to this day, the greatest sliding door moment in sports that I can recall.

Allen was discovered by a scout that Jimmy Johnson had worked with for years before he came to the Cowboys. You can bet the house that Jimmy knew all about Allen and had planned to draft him all along. I wouldn't even doubt that Jerry used Jimmy's draft board that year.

Yes I agree. I remember the story of him drafting Leon Lett in the 7th round of 91. He played at a tiny school, Emporia or something like that. Jimmy just loved his athleticism.
Lett played for all 3 SB teams.
It wasn't just Jimmy getting lucky. He did a total rebuild in 89, and by 1990 were competing for a playoff spot. 1991 was one of my favorite Cowboy teams. Young, scrappy, missing a few key guys. Aikman getting hurt didnt help, but that loss to Detroit really propelled them the following year.
I think I remember every game of those years.... what a joy to watch from 90-93.

Yes I loved those rebuilding years. You could see the team was heading in the right direction. Now we really don't know what the direction is.

T-Day game against Washington in 1990. Emmitt's rookie year, broke a long TD run to seal the game.
Pat Summerall said, and John Madden agreed. something like...with all the draft picks they have and if they get lucky, and that is exactly what the draft is, luck, they will be a very good team for a long time....

I have that game on VHS also.

Stats never tell the whole story. Aikman made big throws when they were needed in big games, and took command of the huddle.

He also had a great supporting cast, and learned from a HOF coach. Then Jerry decided Jimmy was unnecessary, they squeezed out 1 more title, and the rest is history.

Anytime you have the owner superseding the right of the coach to discipline his players as he sees fit -- that's the beginning of the end. Jerry likes the idea of the players coming to him when they have issues with the coach, instead of allowing the coach to settle it on his own. We've heard of that happening many times since Jimmy left the Dallas Cowboys.

Anytime an owner interferes with the HC's authority to discipline his players as he sees fit, the players tend to lose respect for their coach. I can't help but wonder to what extent this is happening today. Let's hope it's not, because this team deserves better than that. I do fear it's still happening to some extent, at least. Some things never change.

Switzer's lack of discipline had nothing to do with the owner. He just wanted to relax and do as little as possible, thinking that professional football players didn't need coaching.
