Troy Aikman predicts Prescott, Cowboys reach extension

Many seem to be starting to think that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will be playing the 2021 season under the team’s franchise tag, as the two sides come up on the one-year anniversary since contract negotiations began for a long-term extension. But legendary Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman told Yahoo Sports! Terez Paylor that he sees the two sides reaching a deal before next season starts. And if they don’t, Aikman doesn’t see Prescott staying in Dallas his entire career.

“I was surprised (a deal wasn’t reached). I really thought that they would have gotten a deal done a year ago,” Aikman said. “I bet that the Joneses wish that had of, too, because the price is up from where it was last year. I think they’ll get a deal done this year. I can’t imagine that Dak’s playing under the franchise tag again this year. If he is, then I have a hard time believing he’s going to finish his career with the Cowboys.

“I’m a huge fan of Dak’s, I’ve said it a lot. He’s a wonderful guy, he’s a great leader, a great teammate. In an era where a lot of guys say they’re all about winning, there’s very few that are, but he’s one of them. I’m hopeful that he gets a deal done and he’s wearing the star for the next 10, 15 years.”

Dallas has until July 15 to sign Prescott to a long term deal instead of paying him the franchise tag salary.

"They will pay him. He's going to make a lot of money, and I think he's going to be the quarterback for the Cowboys for a long, long time, and continue to have a great career," Aikman said.

"I've maintained that I strongly believe that they'll reach a deal, and he'll have a long-term contract as opposed to playing under the franchise tag this year."

They will get it done and then the FO will stagger to make any moves to build the defense and it's same song, different verse with Dak at the helm instead of Romo (or any other QB we have had over the last 25 years). The only way we get to a championship level is with an elite QB and decent defense, or a decent QB with a top 3 defense.

Technically it wouldn't be an extension, because there is no existing contract to extend, but I agree that it is likely the Cowboys and Dak get a deal done. It may not happen before the deadline to tag a player, but my guess is it will be done before OTAs

LOL, nice one there. Is it me or does it seem Troy seems to be getting into the Cowboys' business a lot more since Tony got his big contract that overshadows Troy's.? I reckon he'll be wrong again. If Jerry wanted to get this done, it would have been regardless of the new salary cap. That's just an excuse why it hasn't been done yet.

The offense will take off now that Andy Dalton (a real QB) is running it.
Andy Dalton is as good as Dak or better.

It's weird watching goofballs try to clown Aikman for stating he thought the team would make the smart move in 2020, they didn't and him now saying OK they will finally make the correct move here.
Aikman was correct to assume they'd get a deal done. They should have because as he notes the price only goes up.

If a guy only played 5 games and his price goes up it shows you just how foolish Dallas was to let it get here.
They only have 3 options now:
1. let him go via URFA and recoup an R3 comp pick in 2022
2. extend him
3. tag him at 37.7M and hold him until he extends or can be traded.
Can teams trade a franchise or transition player?
Yes. Franchise and transition players can be traded. However, players with unsigned tenders can't be traded until signed. A franchise or transition player essentially has a de facto no-trade clause or veto power on being dealt.
