And Troy Aikman agrees.

“I don’t feel this team is as good as it was a year ago,” the three-time Super Bowl champ said Thursday of his former club during a call-in with The Ticket KTCK 96.7 FM/1310 AM. “It doesn’t mean that they’re not talented enough to go on and do all the things that they want to do, because I think that they are. I think they’re one of those teams that, as you look at the landscape of the NFL and certainly the NFC, you feel the Cowboys have as good a chance as any of them. So we’ll see how it goes.”

“Even though last year they lost that game,” Aikman said, “I think everybody came out of that game going, ‘Wow, this team has a chance to be pretty good.’ I know I was impressed with what I saw. I’m hopeful that they go out and play at the level that they’re capable of, and if they do that, then I think Tampa has their issues as well. I think they can get off to a really great start.”

We lost several starters from last year.
We certainly have a less talented team.

No way to know unless he attended a lot of practices. The starters didn't play in the preseason.

Obviously on paper, no Cooper and no Tyron makes it appear weaker.

The defense on the other hand looks better. Gregory was the only "loss" and it is just a matter of time before Sam Williams is clearly better than Gregory. Fowler might be better than Gregory is Fowler stays healthy.

Barr replaces Neal's roster spot at LB.

Jabril Cox replaces Bernard's roster spot.

I agree. If Troy didn't attend any practices then I'm going to stick with the knowledge of the fine posters at the zone. Most of them are head and shoulders above Troy's football mind. Sorry Troy.

If someone asked him about Bohanna, would he know his position without looking at a roster?

All NFL players and coaches are experts. How do they ever lose a game?

Yeah I agree with this. Yep we lost starters and we're not as good on paper as last year. But we're still good enough to make a run at the NFC if we stay healthy. We didn't fail in the playoffs last year due to talent. We failed due to immaturity, unpreparedness, and stupidity. McCarthy failed us, the team played poorly and stupid penalties. But talent wise I feel we should have won that game but the moment was too big for us. So Troy's right. We're not as good on paper but if we play within ourselves and are prepared to play and most importantly play smart; then we can make some noise.

I think he's mainly remarking on the offensive side of the ball. No Cooper. No Tyron. No Collins. No Jarwin. No Wilson. Even no Williams. Some of the players we have instead may prove to be better, but right now, they are largely question marks.

You could even throw in Zuerlein. He was bad for us last year, but from a talent level careerwise, he's considerably higher up the ladder than Maher.

Sure, we don't have the luxury of a proven commodity in some positions. We can't point back to last season to say, yes, that guy is battle tested, and we know he can do it again. So it's an uphill battle, doesn't mean guys can't step up.

If you go back and dig up all of the press clippings on that young Cowboys team that Troy quarterbacked, I don't think the reviews would be very favorable. But that didn't stop them from going out and winning the super bowl. I believe the old adage is, and that's why they play the game.

Go Cowboys :flagwave:

We have a chance.
But have we overcome the issues you mentioned?
And we now have less talent too boot!

Yes we will have different starters from last year.. but some of the replacements will be clear upgrades. Hooker will be better than Kazee.. Barr will be better than Jaylon. Fowler/Armstrong/Williams will be better than Gregory/Armstrong/Golston. The DT rotation that started out with Watkins, Urban, Bohanna, and Osa will now start with Gallimore, Hill, Bohanna, and Osa. That unit will be MUCH stronger IMHO. Tyler Smith will be better than Connor Williams. Though he will not be as good as Tyron Smith any time soon. Some of these youngsters might not get the memo that they're not supposed to be as good as the guys they replaced. Then there are guys who stayed put who will simply be better with experience.. Cox, Mukuamu, Biadasz, McGovern, ... I guess I'm a glass half full kinda guy.. who also will never equate a "name" with talent. Lots of guys we never heard of come in and take the league by storm every year. This year will be no different.

I don't know. I'm looking forward to seeing them play. Some of the talent we lost also is some of the immaturity we lost. Speaking specifically of Collins and Gregory. The biggest question in my mind is why were we so tense in the playoffs and how could our super bowl winning coach not have us prepared? That question will only be answered if we play in the playoffs. We ended the season acting pretty immature on and off the field. I was hoping and counting on our veteran super bowl winning coach to have those specific issues handled.

So we'll see. I wonder is our maturity issues the owner/GM fault, ala culture; poor coaching or we just can't play with the bad boys. This will be a fun year to see it play out. Lol, well hopefully fun to watch.

Hey I admire your optimism.
You could very well be right and I hope you are!
