A really good movie that had a chance to be so much better, the ending was extremely weak.

I never saw the original.

I was expecting more of a story along the lines of Cogburn being thought of as more of a legend and they *thought* he was nothing but a drunken joke, then the girl is taken, and then Cogburn comes back with a vengeance and makes the bad guys rue the day.

I thought the acting was fantastic. I think critics and people in general fall in love with that. Reminds me of 'There Will Be Blood.' 'There Will Be Blood' was a terribly written movie and really just a complete mess...but the acting in general was good and Daniel Day Lewis' acting was phenomenal. In the end it came away with rave reviews, but I personally don't see how anybody can justify the *movie* as being great. If Lewis was replaced by a decent actor who did a decent job, they'd pan the entire movie.

Same thing here. Bridges is excellent and so is the rest of the cast, but the moview itself was nothing to write home about.

Been avoiding this movie because I know that I can not enjoy it. I am a John Wayne fan and I doubt I will ever see a movie he was in that has been remade and enjoy it.

I'm sure it's just me but I'd rather just enjoy the John Wayne films and be content.

Was a great movie.

I know my fellow John Wayne fans will hate it ...... but it was a very good movie.

I was a big John Wayne fan and of course saw him in True Grit but I would like to see this version of it with Jeff Bridges playing the role.

It's odd that people will not watch this movie because it is a remake of a John Wayne Classic.

I saw this movie with a few people including my Grandmother, who is a huge John Wayne fan and she absolutely loved it.

Of course, as soon as we stepped out of the theater the first thing she said was "It was good but not as good as the one with the Duke" :laugh2: .

Gonna see it...love John Wayne...but so what...I like Jeff Bridges too.

AMC will be airing the original True Grit on Saturday.

No point in watching the old one when the new one replaces it. :muttley:

One of the few remakes that was as good or better than the first. Loved it and it is better than the original.

I know the term remake keeps being tossed around, but this is not a remake of the John Wayne movie. This movie is MUCH closer to how the novel was originally written than the John Wayne one. Its also quite a bit better IMO.

if your going to spend a whole movie talking about getting the bad guy you should spend more than 5 seconds on him once you find him.

And I always thought you were intelligent

I assume he was talking about as an actor.

Jeff Bridges is a very good actor he can play a variety of roles.

John Wayne was ...... well ...... he was John Wayne ....... and that is the only thing he played.

Portis wrote the book with the Duke in mind. He also said after the movie was done that that was what he wanted.

Don't see how you can really argue with this.

John Wayne was John Wayne. He was a Cowboy and didn't do anything else.
That's not to say he wasn't a fantastic cowboy, but I don't think you can really argue he was a better overall actor.
