Trying isn't good enough

Fans keep hoping there’s going to be an awakening for our dysfunctional ownership to change their ways but an epiphany isn’t coming.

We can still root on our Cowboys without hoping for change. Much like we’d root on a friend or family while not expecting them to change their ways.

And hope the team can overcome their leadership’s dysfunction and toxic environment.

That doesn’t mean we should stop being critical but as long as the record revenue continue we aren’t providing much motivation or incentive to change.
I haven't watched them as much the last couple of years....I have the game on but miss alot...Maybe the longevity of not being good enough is showing itself?

All GMs do. Except Jerry. A GMs job is to acquire players. To acquire players you must have some knowledge of said players. Jerry does not.
I’m sure they’re more involved than Jerry, but I guarantee most GMs let their scouts do their jobs. In turn the scouts report their findings to the GM who makes the final draft decisions.

Isn’t that what the scouts are for? What GM realistically has the time to run a whole organization and scout players?
They may not all watch deep tape on every player in the draft and other current NFL players but it is absolutely a full time job and then some for 31 NFL GMs

I would estimate Jerry puts in about 20% of the time and effoet as other GMs and that’s being generous

He spends way more time and energy on his ownership work and his other businesses outside of the Cowboys.

This is a major reason why he sucks.

If we draft two studs at 12 and 20 I think we likely win the NFCE. But, that isn't saying much because the division just isn't very good and even with that, I don't expect us to compete with the better teams in the league yet. If we draft two studs and also trade for Brooks (or acquire a good MIKE some other way) I think we can with luck have a good season and finish the year with our sites set on competing for more in 2027
The Eagles have a draft too
  • Round 1, Pick 23
  • Round 2, Pick 54
  • Round 3, Pick 68
  • Round 3, Pick 98
  • Round 4, Pick 114
  • Round 4, Pick 137
  • Round 5, Pick 178
  • Round 6, Pick 197

Cowboys
  • Round 1, Pick 12
  • Round 1, Pick 20
  • Round 3, Pick 92
  • Round 4, Pick 112
  • Round 5, Pick 152
  • Round 5, Pick 177
  • Round 5, Pick 180
  • Round 7, Pick 218

And the GMs watch a ton of tape and read a ton of those scouting reports. This is what I'm trying to tell you, Jerry refuses to do so. That's why we make mistakes like Mazi and Gregory.

GMs do not just listen to the scouts and then make decisions willy nilly. There is tons and tons more to it than that.

Well said.

NFL GMs in general are completely immersed in the team, and specifically in player acquisition.

Remember when Jerry traded for Roy Williams(WR)? Why was that bad? RW was an accomplished slant runner. Why was that bad? Because Romo's worse throws were slants and crosses. So, our GM gave up major resources for a WR that was never going to fit w/ Romo. I seriously doubt that Jerry even knew or understood that Romo wasn't great on those type throws. Why? Because Jerry does not do his homework.

Before this very important off-season began, our owner/GM stated once again publicly that they were willing to “break the bank” to add talent to this roster. Halfway through the 2026 off-season that has not happened.

And both JJ and SJ continue to tell the fan base they “tried” to acquire a top edge rusher and FA LB but the prices were “too high”. (Side note: NFL truth - The best talent out there is not coming here for less money. You have to overpay. Sorry sad truth)

So…as fans…are we now supposed to give our FO “credit” just for trying to sign or trade for a big impact player? But the price was too high? We didn’t get it done, but “we tried”? Seems to me in professional sports credit is earned when you do it, not when you simply try.

That’s especially true IMO with a front office that does a ton of talking but rarely back it up. And the only way we heard they tried so hard is they tell us all the time…without getting it done.

I think it’s fair for Cowboys fans to say at this point, “Don’t tell us what you’re planning or hoping to do. Show us what you've done.” Otherwise stop talking. Talk when it’s done.

This FO should not get the benefit of the doubt with the track record they have given us for decades.
I just try to enjoy this team, because I grew up with them...I Try to turn the negativity into positivity, because n matter how much some Try to change things, nothing will change. Trying to have fun and succeeding at the expense of others misery is not really what I Try to do, but it just happens. Try and Try again, I never changed anything by busting my TV, beating up on a drunk hater, although that felt pretty good, I Tried that, didn't work, so now i Try not to.....Trying has worked for me, except when I Tried to watch my VHS tapes from the 90s....don't Try that.
Have a good day, or at least Try to....Go Spurs!!
Now, I'll sit back and enjoy all the homer, Dak lover, Jerry minion comments....I don't even have to Try and laugh at those!!!

Eagles are in trouble. You keep Brown and your locker room gets even worse. You trade him and you have a massive hole and a problem for a QB who is a poor passer and really become one dimensional

I 100% support you getting to express your opinions my friend. That’s what this place is all about.

Like you, I grew up with the Cowboys. My Dad took me to my first Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl when I was 6 years old. I have loved the Cowboys ever since.

The reason I post here is because I care about the Cowboys winning. And I talk a lot about what I believe is preventing that from happening and how we might be able to start winning playoff games once again. Because I care. And I enjoy the friendships I’ve developed with all kinds of Cowboys fans. Like you for example.

And yes, I’m fine with all the (as you call them) “homer” comments, or whatever else people want to say. This Cowboys fan opinion forum is healthy because we don’t all agree on everything. And as long as we don’t cut each other down while doing it, are free to express our opinions.

But if the day ever comes when we can hoist a Lombardi again…or even get close. We can all celebrate that achievement.

I went a different way. To avoid the extreme emotions being a fan can bring out, I turned to analyzing and reading and such. I find it highly entertaining to examine scouting reports and try to figure out what makes a player succeed or not. And then it really gets dicey when all signs point toward success and it turns out to be elusive. Trevor Lawrence is a good example. All signs pointed toward him being a top 5 QB PDQ. But, he just hasn't turned that corner.

I'll try! Lol

I used to love to breakdown film, I took pride in finding little flaws and tells that would help us beat better teams...miss that....

Possibly so. But I would never support a franchise that I believe had no chance of turning itself around. That’s just being a glutton for punishment.

I’m still here because I believe it can be different. Maybe that’s naive.

I’m trying to figure out why you are still here if you have no hope.
Because that's what fans do

The draft isn't our problem. Every team has draft picks they'd like back. Our fatal flaw is sitting out free agency. That's problem #1, 2 and 3. Other issues are overvaluing our own players and dragging out the negotiations until it's too late to do anything else because we have no real plan or vision and just instead make decisions day to day. There also seems to be a cash flow issue. Not necessarily that they don't have it, but maybe just that they don't want to part with it. So they try and trade for players whose signing bonuses are already out of the way and who cost us draft picks which hurts our draft and usually these players have been disappointments for one reason or another and then we are surprised when most are disappointments here as well.

How often to most teams sign a big $, impact outside free agent? On average once every year and a half (guessing)? Some teams twice in one offseason. We signed a safety to an average contract and that's the first one in a decade and a half. Assume we have been doing that all along and add 3 big money free agents to this team and we look a lot better. You sit out one of the major player acquisition avenues and you are just incompetent and playing with a handicap. Ignoring the best players ins free agency is not defendable, sustainable, smart or reasonable if the goal is a SB.

i would take 3 or 4 straight years of that kind of trouble if i could have 2 championships in the past 10 years .
They are playing with house money for awhile IMO.

Who is talking about the past? Might as well start talking 90s like some fans always seem to want to. The discussion is what's next. We can't go back in time and win last years division

So one of the other three NFC East teams should win the division easily this season?
