This is why some of the original NFL names were like the Duluth Kelleys, named after Kelleys Hardware Store and the Chicago Staley's named after Staley's Furniture. The Packers name is actually short for Meatpackers.
Today you have owners whose names are recognizable like Hunt and Kraft
The only times the Cowboys have been sold was because the previous owners were losing money from their original business. It wasn't because the franchise, itself, was losing money.
Jerry Jones wasn't the first to consider the NFL a profitable venture to be sure. However, he is probably the one most responsible for the marketing explosion and corporate partnerships that brough billions into the NFL. For this, they rewarded Jerry with induction into the Hall of Fame. Their recent increase in wealth was Jerry Jones's contribution to the game of football.
Unfortunately, it also pushed out a large percentage of the population for whom the league was originally formed. The average citizen would find it difficult to bring his family to a game on a regular basis at an average price of around $125 per person a game, not including parking and other costs.
