To say Turpin is a bit smallish would be an understatement.

Speed's the deal in punt returns. Turpin has that in spades.

The team could easily afford to try him out in training camp.

Turpin also has the ability to catch the football and avoid near tackles. We could use him not only as a returner but as a receiver situationally.

Can't understand why someone isn't giving him a shot. Is his baggage just too much considering his size restrictions? I know being the MVP of the USFL isn't worth much, but it seems like someone would try him as a returner.

I saw some great ability there, too. But the team believes his weight is a concern. I initially thought he was 159, which would likely be the lightest NFL player by far. Still, 175 is light. In 2010, the Texans had Trindon Holliday, who was 165. And he was the lightest, at that time, I think. 175 makes him just 10 pounds lighter than Holliday.

He was dismissed from the TCU team after his arrest for domestic violence.
- Witnesses saw him dragging his girlfriend across a parking lot by the hair.
- Reportedly she hit him prior to the dragging.

Also, he weighed 158 pounds and is less than 5-8.
Sweet Tavon Austin with Character issues.....

It's a tough league for small players but some have proven to be the exception. His play in the USFL should warrant him at least a look. I guess you could say we gave him that with a tryout, but I think he should be given a preseason shot. I know he has some character concerns, but I haven't seen anything to say that those are still an issue.

I wanted them to sign him for punt returns. They need more options there.

I was worried they were looking @ Melvin Turpin to play left tackle.....

That's the main thing for me. I wouldn't necessarily expect or worry about him contributing as a receiver. We need to put some effort into returns to try to maximize the production we get from them. Maybe someone will step up, but it seems like we're leaving them to chance.

Agree. And I didn't mean to say the team thinks his weight is a concern. I meant to write the team may think his weight is a concern, because I don't know for sure. But that's what comes to my mind when I look at Turpin.

I'll take a young Tavon Austin for the cost of a UDFA...
Sorry NFL has evolved beyond P, LS, K the other 50 odd players have to have some added value besides being only a KR/PR. At that guys size he would get destroyed like Tavon Austin did, and be on the injury report every year. Too small to play any other positions.
