If Turpin has a job at the end of the preseason, then I think it's a pretty safe bet that we'll want him to return the kicks. There are players who have more positional value who can be put back there just to make a fair catch.

If that’s the case, then it’s time to find a new direction for your special teams coach.

It would be dumb of him to fair catch it outside of the end zone. If he’s averaging 24 yards a return and a fair catch at the (let’s say) the 10 yard line puts us at the 25 then he is actually forfeiting 9 yards.

If they don't allow the pooch kicks that need to be fair caught, there's no reason to fair catch any regular style kicks that are short of the goal line. Start off catching and running them all, but if the return team sucks, can't block and gets penalties on most kicks, that's when the coach will tell him to start fair catching them, especially in crunch time of games when we can't afford a penalty to set us back inside the ten.

I'll be surprised early on if returners fair catch any that don't go into the end zone (unless they are kicked to the sideline or something awkward happens). The ones who have limited success returning those will likely be relegated to fair catching them. Most coaches will exchange four returns that don't reach the 25 for one that gets you across midfield.

Parcells used to talk about yardage in relation to points. I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was essentially that a certain amount of yards (however you get them) should translate into a certain amount of points. So for example, if a kick returner has two returns that don't reach the 25 (let's say a total of 20 lost yards) and one that reaches midfield (25 gained yards), then the gain is worth the losses. It's sort of like a running back who averages 4 yards per carry. Obviously, not every carry goes 4 yards and some may even go for negative yardage, but you have to look at the whole picture.

I actually think it could add a little sumtin to kick offs. Make them a little more interesting.

Do kickers still try directional kicks? Kick it high and shorter to tempt them to return it?

And we could see better returns now. Lets say there was a right return called but the ball was kicked to the left corner, short of the endzone. The returner could just fair catch it now if it doesnt look like its setup correctly. Where as before he would have had to return it.

Absolutely no way he gets cut. Like not even a chance. Especially with Duece not even taking any kicks during OTA’s.

Don’t think folks understand how hard returning is these days and how the big plays have decreased.
