TV issues..

For some reason, my TV has started messing up when changing channels. It doesn't do it all the time, but enough to get me concerned.

Usually, I select the channel and the channel changes right away. Now there's somewhat of a delay. The sound is fine and the picture does come through, there's just a brief delay occasionally.

I'm thinking I should disconnect/reconnect to make sure everything is connected properly.

But after that, what should I consider doing? TV's only five years old. I've got a 13inch older than that. Grr.

It's probably your DVR assuming you have one. I sometimes get a delay when changing channels but it's the DVR not the TV.

Yes, I have a DVR. So do I call a DTV repair person or something?

If you have cable or satellite your channels are being changed through your cable/satellite receiver. Alot of problems that occur are with the cable/satellite receiver not the TV. A delay with channels changing is pretty normal at least with satellite receivers.

I've got Directv and I've had the HD DVR for awhile now. This just started in the last couple weeks.

And when I say delay, I'm not saying a delay between broadcasts. Like a show on DTV will show slower than a show that's on a standard broadcast antenna.

I'm saying the screen freezes, I get a funky looking screen, and then the channel comes up. That doesn't seem normal to me.

You can call and talk to one of their tech people but as I mentioned a delay with channels changing is pretty normal with satellite TV. I'm not sure about cable because it's been years since I've had cable.

If it's freezing and you're getting a funky looking screen then that doesn't sound normal. I thought you were just getting a delay for a channel to appear right after you changed it.

Do you have HD? I had that problem because my HDTV was switching between 1080, 720 and 480 resolution depending on the resolution being broadcast by each channel. I never cared, but it drove my wife nuts.

Yes, I have HD. I usually only watch the HD channels on DTV.

Your wife's not the only one. This is bugging the heck out of me.

What did you and your wife do?

If you call DTV they'll probably tell you to unplug your DVR for 15 seconds then plug it back in and allow it to power back up. That usually solves alot of issues. If that doesn't help they'll run you through several other trouble shooting methods.

Well, if the other options don't work, you can try this:

  • Choose the "menu" option on your remote.
  • Select "Parental Fav's & Setup"
  • Select "System Set-up"
  • Select "HDTV"
  • Under Video, select "Native"
  • This should say "On". This is what tells it to send the signal to the TV in whatever format it is being broadcast in. If you select "off". You can then manually select how you want the signal sent to you TV.

When done with that, you can go to your DTV box and hit the "Res" button to manually turn the broadcast to whichever format you would like. It will not make the resolution any better for the lower res channels, but it will stop the adjustments that your TV is making when you turn it from HBO (1080i) to, say Nickjr (480i) and back again. I believe that most of the HD channels on DTV are broadcast in 1080i, so if you are to manually set it up, that would probably be the best candidate. They should have a list of the broadcast frequencies on DTV's website if you want to review them and see which setting might be best for your TV. If it doesn't fix the issue, you can always go back in and turn the "Native" option back on.

When the batteries in my DVR remote get low. The DVR becomes sluggish responding to commands. Including changing channels.

Oh ok. Unfortunately, this doesn't really have anything to do with the remote. TV takes commands fine. It's the action AFTER that's the command.

This sounds like what you should do. Reboot the DVR, I had a similar problem and rebooting the system worked fine for me. I unplugged it, waited a minute and plugged it back in, at times I have taken the card out and reinserted it.
