Two most glaring holes in our team: Coaching and defense

I think we're actually not that far away from being a contender. I look at 2014 and what we did without a great coaching staff and a defense and I feel pretty good about our future. We have the Qb. We have the weapons on offense. And we built a young and nasty offensive line.

So that leaves two glaring needs that need to be looked at moving forward. The first one is the coaching staff. And the second one is the defense. I think we'll have to live with the darn process one more season and not a single second longer. The defense hopefully improves via draft, free agency and players getting healthy. I know it sounds like a lot but a lot can change in one year.

Cowboys please draft wisely :)

Unless we improve our secondary, we are still far from being a contender. Unless Romo and the offense can repeat what they did 2 years ago (without Murray).

The difference in defensive team speed, ability to play zone and man and tackling is glaring to watch between these playoff teams, especially Denver and Carolina.

We need to change defensive personnel philosophy and get acclimated with what offenses are doing these days. The offenses are set up so the safeties and MLB have to have so much responsiblities, different skill sets and high football IQ that you just can't have 1-dimensional players at those positions and you had better be able to tackle. You might get away with 1-dimensional players at 1 of those positions like Kam Chancellor, but he's supported by Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner, both of whom are incredible.

What I like about Marinelli is that his scheme is a bit more modern in terms of personnel needed, but I'm not convinced he'll be into finding that athletic, top level safety(s) we need

I would say leadership in front office of the organization.

People laughed at Jerry Krause when he said organizations win championships, not players. But a bad organization would've given into their star players wishes and drafted Joe Wolfe and Kenny Smith. Good organizations find a Scottie Pippen and an Horace Grant and tell the Goat we do our job and you do yours.

There is a reason why Lebron won in Miami and he won't in Cleveland. Riley had a backbone. What the Cle. Org. did to that coach was disgraceful.

We need a back bone and intelligence in the front office. And that entails more than just selecting players.

We need an organization that sets a standard of professionalism, hard work, being prepared. No more begging players to play! No more talk of Romo having a say in who his successor will be, unless you give him the keys to the org. ala Elway.

Just a little rant to let off steam. It's been 20 years !

For the defense, build from the trenches on out, not the secondary first. It all starts up front with constant pressure. It will not matter if we get a stellar secondary if the front can't get to the QB.

Give Rod something other than castoffs from other teams and watch this defense go from top 10 to top 5.

I think more than any other area is FS and I would also like to see a DT who can cause problems inside and stuff the run.

This team needs offensive fire power as well. Dez and who else??

Yep and I wouldn't count on Dez either.

An entirely new set of skill position players is in order. With some actual deep speed on the field.

How can you sit there and say coaching and defense are our biggest holes, then in the same breath say were not that far away from being a contender?

Do you see both of those holes being filled any time soon? You also forgot the RB and backup QB hole.

Who are these 'cast offs' you're referring to?

The only reason we have McClain and Hardy is because they were ejected from their previous teams and we became problem child fixer upper.

The only player on the line that we can see being a possible pro bowl player is Lawrence. Our DT is good, but he isnt a difference maker. I dont see any long term stars at LB. Lee is playing on borrowed time and likely on the downside of this career. In the secondary, the only guy I see being good long term is the rookie Jones.

And you're saying that these guys can't play?

Or are you claiming that Marinelli had them forced in him against his will?

Kubiak won in his 1st year with a qb with 1 leg. That team was built over night. They got new coaches, free agents and draft picks. They won the sb.

Yes we can replace Linehan and Garrett. We can draft well and we can patch in free agency. Teams change drastically each year. I believe we're close enough.
