Eagles | Decisions coming at offensive tackle
Mon, 16 Jan 2006 16:48:19 -0800

Mark Eckel, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Philadelphia Eagles face two major decisions at offensive tackle in 2006. OT Tra Thomas will be coming off back surgery and he is due to count close to $5 million against the team's 2006 salary cap. The team's other starter, OT Jon Runyan, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. It's doubtful both will be back, but the team can't afford to lose both.

This is great news! I don't want either one but great news.

Runyan would make our O line ancient and we already have a LT who will play another 2-4 years.

I hope Dallas doesn't want either of those guys... I'd much rather get a couple of guys in this upcoming draft... it is supposed to be deep in big guys

Thomas is just as old as Ellis, plus we already had an O-lineman with a back issue... and Runyan is even older and slipping in talent...

No thanks

When you sign a Jon Runyon your buying time to draft and develope a prospect. Same with Bledsoe, Imagine Runyon playing for a year and mentoring Petteti. I could go for some of that.

Yes, these guys are what I call transition players until you can develop some else.

Numerous Offensive Tackles are to be had in the 1st and maybe the 2nd round.

Larry Allen, Flozell Adams, and Marco Rivera are veterans that can give him some guidance and the Line Coach needs to do the rest.

If we go for a FA Lineman, I would prefer it to be a Center.

Yup. a 2 year deal heavy on incentives.

Good OLinemen can play forever anyways. How old is Runyan?

if we don't sign a veteran OL at SOME position, I will flat out just up and die...

Runyan is a liability at times because he's so slow footed.

I would rather nab Jason Fabini.

yay another old overpaid OL. We can toss them in the trash heap along with Rivera.

I agree about buying time. I don't think Bill has given up on Pettiti's future as a starter as fast as some here have. I think the young player will be given every chance to succeed. If he can't, I would imagine that Bill would like to have someone capable of stepping in and starting without hurting the team.

The Cowboys have been held hostage by the right tackle position for 2 consecutive years because they've tried to address it with undrafted free agents and 6th round draft picks. To make it a 3rd year would be absolutely criminal, and I don't believe its going to happen. Parcells made an artform out of saying "our tackles suck" without outright saying it in his press conferences. Pettiti will hopefully make a nice little backup swing tackle, and there's nothing wrong with that with a 6th round draft pick. Its an upgrade over Kurt Vollers.

I dunno if I want that much age on the line. We commit money to one of these guys, we are looking to replace them in 2 or so years anyways.

I dont want to mess with another Lineman with back problems. Heavy lifting is a ***** on your back, and we dont need another vet who may not be what we expected. As it is, Im hoping Rivera can return to his previous form.

I'm interested in Kevin Barry from Green Bay. I've always heard and read good things about him. He's still pretty young, but he's got experience, and he should be familiar with our RG too.

Kevin Barry sounds good to me

he has talent, just wasn't able fulfill his potential under his contract in Green Bay, sound familiar? so we could find our future starter at RT, or just have someone to hold the position down until we find the future

My concern with Barry is that he may have a high price tag. Who knows? He may be viewed as an "up and comer" who can your RT for years, or he may be viewed as a guy who wasn't even a starter at Green Bay. He is an option though...

There are plenty of other RTs who would also interest me. Unlike some, I don't think youth has to be the prerequisite.
