He's making plays out there and has been really disruptive. I'm glad to see him scratch the surface of his potential and is starting to live up to the preseason hype. Him and Melton should be a good 1-2 punch for us.

Melton might not be here next year. His salary goes up to 9 million next year.. Hopefully we can draft a replacement..

I agree. If Crawford is a natural at 3-tech (which it appears he is), then I don't see a reason to keep Melton. So far, Melton hasn't looked anything better than average. We're lucky that he accepted a cheap "try out" offer, but if we decide to keep him it will cost us. I see us grooming Coleman as our backup 3-tech. Or maybe even Okoye if he can come back healthy. As it stands now, Crawford is getting twice as many snaps as Melton, so no need to pay Melton twice as much money. That leaves an opening at SDE now. I don't see Selvie as a long-term solution.

The question is will crawford make melton a cap casualty next year? I heard melton deal was basically a one year deal kind of a look and see deal and then we can keep him or cut him.

What are the salary cap implications if we cut melton vs keeping him if crawford keeps improving? Could give us more to sign dez, McClain and another piece.

Melton needs to be All Pro the second half of the year if he wants to get a new contract. I don't remember the details, but I remember his contract going up considerably after this "trial year." He better be way better than Crawford if he wants to stay on the roster. I don't see it happening.

Dallas can always rework Melton ' s deal. Marinelli will want to keep him, if Marinelli is still in dallas.

wait until they get some help on the edge from guys like Lawrence....look out!

Anything positive would be a bonus from the rookie. But honestly I am not expecting much from a rookie who has missed extensive amount of time.

The future is now. He was the starting 3-tech against the Texans and had 43 snaps as compared to 21 for Melton.

The team has the option to exercise the second part of Melton's contract, which is 3 years for 24 million dollars. That's highly unlikely. This year he will make somewhere between 2.5MM - 3.5MM depending on incentives, it makes sense for both sides to start from scratch and negotiate a new contract as soon as the season ends.

he breakdown is in on Melton’s one-year contract that carries a three-year option. According to a source, he can make as little as $2.25 million this season and as much as $29 million over the next four seasons.
Chicago used its franchise tag on Melton last season, when he was paid $8.5 million.

Melton can earn up to $5 million this season playing for the Cowboys. His base salary is $1.25 million, and he gets a $1 million signing bonus.

Melton, who played in only three games last season because he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament, will be paid $78,125 per week in 2014 if he’s on the 46-man game day roster. If he plays in all 16 games for the Cowboys, that will mean an additional $1.25 million for him. Melton can earn up to $1.5 million more in incentives in 2014 based on the number of sacks he gets and his playing time.

Melton’s current salary-cap hit is $1.7 million, but that can climb to as much as $5 million as he earns more money. After signing Melton, the Cowboys still have $4.9 million in salary-cap room for next season, according to the latest NFLPA report.

After 2014, the Cowboys have the option to extend Melton’s contract for three seasons. If Melton is on the Cowboys’ roster on the first day of the new league year next March, he’ll be signed through 2017.

If Melton shows the Cowboys what they want to see — that he’s healthy and returns to his 2012 Pro Bowl form — he will get a fully guaranteed $9 million base salary in 2015. The Cowboys can prorate Melton’s $9.25 million cap hit in 2015 by dividing it equally over the last three seasons of his deal.

He is the new Spencer ("Almost Anthony"). I feel bad for him because he would have had 2 sacks as a DT that I know of if he wasn't held. At least he got the call.

I'll be interested to see how Melton plays the 2nd half of the year. Right now he's still getting acclimated to playing football again and trusting that he's healthy.

I wish we still had Hatcher.

well, he wouldn't be on the edge, but I get your point....and, I have heard his name mentioned a lot in Commander games...(at least in the hi-lights)...

I am going to be labeled a homer for saying this but I think that Crawford's ceiling, not current ability, is Chris Doleman who was developed under Marinelli in Minnesota during the 1980s. He was slow to develop in his first two years and then came out his third year.

The combination of speed and power is there; the skills using his hands and fluidity, bend and body control are not all in unison. However if he can put it all together then that is the type of player that I see. Quick, strong and size with the ability to move around from spot to spot. DE is a harder position to play unless you have truly elite quickness like a Barr or Mack and I expect that he will get better there as time goes by; it might not be this year.

Marinelli likes to move his guys around and I could see him down the line using Crawford like Doleman in moving around the line. I really do not buy the notion that he is exclusive to any position on the line.

I do love watching player development as it is the key to program success. We are doing well this year.
