As he was thoroughly dominated by one of the greatest D-linemen to ever play the game in Aaron Donald giving up two sacks in the first half and being called for holding as well but I will say this he finished strong and he didn't get his name called in the second half which was a good sign but there isn't anyone in the league better to learn from in Donald and Smith won't see anyone of his caliber the rest of the season. This kid is playing solid and is only going to get better.

Yeah when they put Donald on him it was ugly. I didn’t do a rewatch yet….did Moore adjust or did they just stop doing it?

That school lesson was Kellen Moores fault. No one with a clear mind lets a Rookie O-Liner who was set for a Guard Spot and now has to start at LT play 1v1 with AD.

It took him almost two quarters to help with a TE and run the Ball on the opposite site of AD.

We can be more forgiving when we win. If we had lost, Smith's early struggles would be pointed at and many fans on here would be lamenting the decision to play him at tackle instead of guard. (They already do.) In reality, we should expect some growing pains from a rookie LT (one of the toughest positions to play as a rookie) and should feel good that he's played as well as he has. It's nice that he can have such a learning experience in a victory, if only so we can avoid the handwringing.

I saw him get in a groove in the second half. And I saw McGovern take on donald and stuffed him. I was shocked.

McGovern may be a bigger surprise to me than Smith. When he couldn't keep Connor Williams on the bench last year despite Williams' penalty problems, I wasn't expecting much from him this year and was pleased that we drafted Smith to fill that LG spot. McGovern isn't perfect, but his play has not been bad.

Against Donald he played too high,Donald is freakishly strong and he will win 100% of the time.Smith got away with it vs weaker DEs but not against Donald.

LOL. He was caught standing there a few times yesterday while letting his quarterback get hit. He's young. He'll adapt.

I think he got a better lesson and advice from Jason Peters, as he told him a few things. TS73 adjusted well to it.
So between both he learned some good stuff.

Nate Newton was talking about this on a post game show. Said the kid is smart, listened, and has a short memory of those negative plays. Learned and will be better for it..

McGovern isn't perfect, but his play has not been bad.

He has always been unfairly criticized. Half the time I read criticism you would look at the play and he wasn't the player that got beat. Folks were just seeing something & blaming him.

He plays with much better anchor power than Williams did and he has a little nasty to him in that when he gets movement he will drive a guy and often put them on the ground.

Need to see it again. But I think it was on GMFB, they mentioned McGovern getting a key block on Pollard's TD run.
Maybe it was posted somewhere in the game thread or another thread.

The simple truth, though, is that he was handed the job last season because of Williams' penalty problems and he just wasn't ready to handle it because we handed it back to Williams. I don't think we should discount that. It's good to see that he has stepped up his play. Got to give Philbin some credit for his development of these young linemen.

I have never really understood that move though. He wasn't playing as bad as it was made out. For whatever warts there were with McG, we knew Williams wasn't the answer so I would have continued to try & grow McGovern. They chose to go back. Dunno why .... but it felt forced.

It is definitely posted in another thread. Also easy to see on broadcast version. They did a fantastic job of blocking on that play. At least the C & left side of the line. Wasn't as focused on the right side since the run didn't go there.

It was forced by McGovern not playing as well as we hoped. We benched Williams for him, so it was his responsibility to keep the job and he didn't. I'm happy with what he's showing this year and maybe keeping in there last year would have helped his development, but we were hoping to play for something last year and McGovern just wasn't our best option for reaching that goal. Too many lapses.

Game speed and intensity increased dramatically with #99 rushing him. He will get better from it.
