As "simple" as this. Well, maybe not simple, but at least this would clarify the offseason need at LT.

I’ve been saying the last couple of years that Smith belongs at LT. Why it took so long is beyond me other than possibly Jerry didn’t want to pay him LT money and chose to go with the rookie instead.

If he's better suited at LT, keep him there and then add some bonuses/incentives to his contract if he plays well there.

I am not sure why he thinks playing LT is not what's best for his career. Sure he is an all-pro LG but wouldn't he want a new challenge? Is he afraid to move to LT, or is it money? If it's money they throw him a few million per year more. He can always move back inside to LG in a couple of years if he feels it is better for his body in the long run.

People need to realize it's not simple as just having Smith play at hist best position. What's important is they need to figure out who our best 5 OL are. They need to decide if having Smith at LT, Bass at LG, and Guyton at RT is better than having Guyton at LT, Smith at LG and Steele or someone else at RT.

If you move him to LT you weaken LG
that is clear; Bass is nowhere near as good as Tyler there

and bluntly speaking Tyler is a good LT and that is all

He has a chance to be an eventual HOF at LG
he was already getting lots of pay there
meanwhile he is only GOOD at LT
you might want to think about that

Damn right. Pay him at a lower pay grade then move him up to a higher pay grade without a pay adjustment? Make sure the agent is there too.

Guyton and Thomas are NOT an option as full time starters at LT for 2026.

So, with that being said the 3 options are:
A. Put Smith there and discuss a future pay raise.
B. Draft a LT with the second first round pick.
C. Acquire a pricey free agent that is better than Chuma Edoga.

That's it.
That's the 3 options going forward.

Well, they got rid of their best player before the start of the season.

They will screw up any attempt to sign Pickens.

Logically, the next step would be to sabotage the career of their best O-lineman.

No one can claim that Jerry isn't methodical in his approach.

I think the team would be wise to put Tyler Smith where he feels happy and replace the other spot with another player where Tyler isn't comfy. It's most likely that he prefers to remain at guard, imho. Forcing him to play where he isn't satisfied would surely constitute a big mistake. There's a reason why he's such a successful player at guard.

If there is only one worth while LT drafting in the first round, you’ll probably have to use the first pick or give up more to move up. There always seems to be teams looking for a stud LT.

However, there is a fourth option. Draft a few in the lower rounds and develop them. Philly did that with Mailata; maybe we can do the same?
