Great questions. Most just had unreasonable expectations because he was a 1st round pick. But that is far from the whole story. He had a 2nd round grade and needed work.

This season will be considerably different for him on the field. A year of experience in the NFL, a full offseason, considerable time in the weight room and better OL coaches.

The Cowboys still view him as the long term answer at LT for a reason. Us fans will start to see that more easily in September.

Tyron Smith was literally all muscle. He was 6'5, 307lb at the combine.

Smith was one of the top prospects in the 2011 draft. He had the athletics and strength to be a day 1 starter on the offensive line. Sure, he could of "bulked" up, but that's a standard comment for most college players coming in.

Dallas allowed Smith to come into the NFL on the right side while acclimating to the speed and strength of the game. Doug Free was a blip at LOT, and they knew he wasn't the long term answer at LT.

Guyton was a bit more rawer than Smith, not as strong, and he got forced to the left side right away. Still had good potential, but a lower floor.
Even if the Sooners moved him purely to the right side cause of his pass blocking strengths, for most tackles, it's a steep relearning curve on footwork, handwork and balance switching sides.
It takes a lot of time, reps and mental work to make that switch. Even hardened NFL tackles have come out and said it's not easy and they struggled with the switch.
There's a reason why barely average swing tackles can make 8-10 year careers in the NFL. It's not just lining up on the other side of the football and hitting someone.

IMO Dallas did a trial by fire with him last year. Hopefully, the switch, and the struggles will help him in year 2, with the reps and knowing what he needs to do now to become a legit starting LOT.

I agree with the OP. He was asked to do what he wasn't ready to do. He had a super tough baptism by fire last year and did ok (not great) doing it. I think he only has one way to go and he he will take a huge step forward this year.
I think that Steele will rebound a bit more as well. It can take some (most) guys at least 18 months to get back to form after a severe knee injury and he did show improvement as the season went on.
I think the inside of the line is going to be really good, even with the rookie Booker at RG. Those three guys seem like bullies who just like to hit people. That's what I want up front.

My concern this offseason was Duke Manyweathers lukewarm endorsement of Guyton after his participation in Duke’s offseason program, OL Masterminds.

This is exactly the type of work you want to see Guyton putting in, but the comments were a little concerning.

big year for Guyton. He is young and played a new position last year. I don't know how you can be positive about him though. The team was much better when he was not at LT. As the season went on, they appeared to realize this. Again, he is young and growing pains were to be expected. Although, there were some bad signs that it was not just regular rookie growing pains.

As good as the interior line is, we have seen how offenses can be destroyed if rushers cause havoc against your team. It can limit your whole offense.

Move him to left guard and Smith from left guard to left tackle.

That's a problem being created that's not where he should be playing if you give up on him at left tackle he needs to be moved to right tackle if you want Tyler Smith out there that's great but you have Hoffman Bass Jones I mean there are guys on here that can also play guard matter of fact you resigned Hoffman because of how well he played last year he would be the left guard..

The point you're missing that everybody else seems to be missing is he can transition the left tackle it's just going to take time and maybe it's this year with a new coaching staff a new voice at offensive line coach not that big a deal I see Troy Aikman did you want to give up on Troy Aikman he was most horrible quarterback in the NFL his rookie year looked like a deer in the headlights through tons of interceptions held onto the ball too long he looked horrible we should have just gave up on him lmao

It's called baptized by fire he literally learned a lot last year and hopefully he takes a step this year that's why we're having this conversation if he going to make a move yeah move Tyler back out the left tackle but you're not putting your right tackle of the future at left guard you would just simply make him the swing tackle or you get rid of steel and you put Guyton out at right tackle..

I'm going to get the coaching staff sometime especially the new coaching staff brand new shiny coaching staff to get him going in the right direction he wasn't horrible everyone who thinks that wasn't really watching especially from game one he got injured he got dinged the more he got beat he got mentally challenged he got in his own head it happens it is left tackle one of the hardest transitions from college to the pros and that's why we're having this discussion because it's exactly that give the man a chance give the coaches a chance because for sure in here nobody in here knows what's best for this guy. I'm with you up until that last paragraph. No reason to completely bail on Guyton this early, but he was certainly horrible last year and any other way of putting it is simply trying to rewrite history. There is a legit argument that Guyton was the worst starting LT in the league last season. 18 penalties in 668 snaps alone would justify that argument. Put on the film and it makes a pretty good argument as well. What concerns me about Guyton is that I cant figure out what his high end trait is. Diggs is a guy that got abused his rookie season, but you could see the natural ball hawking ability. Tyler Smith took his lumps as a rookie and racked up the penalties, but you could also see him straight dominate at time and improve as the season went on. I didn't see any of that from Guyton year 1 and it takes me back to lets show some patience with the kid, but we also better have a really strong plan B to fall back on if Guyton struggles early on too.
