USC OT Tyron Smith may elect not to run at the Combine because he underwent a knee scope at the end of the Trojans' season.

Rotoworld: He could opt to wait instead for USC's pro day. Smith injured the knee late in the season and spent most of January rehabbing. He's also adding much-needed weight, having bulked up from 285 to 304 pounds. A potential late first-round pick, Smith is expected to approach 4.80 in the forty-yard dash.

Whether it's weight he can keep on is open for debate, but looks like he can indeed add weight.

If it's significant news that he can get up to 304, that's a problem.

Great! I hope someone else takes him ahead of us.

DO NOT draft a project at #9.

He's only 20.

Although it is doubtful that he will ever be able to consistently stay above the 310 range, he is a freak athlete.

Project? A project is Stanglass, Jason Williams etc. This guy is the top pass blocker in a passing league (PAC 10). Not saying he is a sure thing, be he is not a project either.

All rookies are projects depending on the way you look at it.

I have no doubt this guy turns out to be a stellar left tackle. We already have a good left tackle though. No thanks.

Tyron Smith couldn't be set on the table any better for the Dallas Cowboys at 9. He is going to be put on a tee for Jerry Jones, and Smith is exactly what this franchise needs to help cure an old and fading fast offensive line. Smith is the new age LT. We shall see.

A 20 year old potential franchise LT, in the mold of D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who could supplant Doug Free in the short term and replace the worst RT in the NFL immediately...

A 20 year old strong and very athletic potential franchise LT who has RT experience.

It couldn't be set up any better for Dallas to nab this guy at 9 and start the OT run.

Project because he has never played or able to maintained that wt. He's just bulking up for the draft.

The films are of him playing at 270. He'll get eaten alive at that wt at T. The guys in NFL are just too strong.

No thanks to Smith at 9.

He's actually a much better run blocker than people give him credit for and a little overrated in pass protection. He needs to sit for a year and learn/refine his technique, but he does have vast potential.

About the weight, bulking up through mass training vs. maintaining a body weight throughout the season are entirely different things. Scouts are worrying about the latter.

What he looks like at the Combine will be critical. If he looks soft he will drop; if he looks ripped and does the reps some say he will on the bar (26-30) then he is looking at top 15 to maybe top 10.

don't know that much about the guy other than his weight scares me. But I will say this, IF he is a franchise LT and IF he is there at 9, you draft him in a heartbeat. You move Free to RT and you have bookends for the next decade.

Doug Free will be 28 next year, he's no young pup.

I'm not against Smith at 9. You have to admit, his ceiling is pretty high. And it's not as if he can't play right now. He's already a good player.

It is quite the risk though.

IMO, we have a decent LT that would be an awesome RT. Smith will be better than Free.

To have both Smith and Free and your left and right tackles for then next 6-10 years would absolutely OWN.

If Smith is 300+lbs, I take him even if he might have issues keep the weight on early.

I think Wocik can help him with that.

At #9, I worry about the FLOOR more than the ceiling. You CANNOT have a BUST picking here.

Greg Ellis had a lower 'ceiling' than Randy Moss and a much higher 'floor' but if the draft were held again, I'd definitely go with Moss.

I would also argue that everyone picked in the top 10 is a gamble and inherently has bust potential. That being considered, you might as well swing for the fences

No thanks to Smith at 9.

Please provide some sort of evidence he was playing at 270.

We all knew he was under 300, but not 270.

He's listed at 291 lb on the ESPN website.

Retrospective view is easy.

Very different case because Moss was not drafted because of OFF FIELD issues not talent. EVERYONE knew he had talent.

You simply cannot draft a BUST at #9. You need a STARTER at 9. You need to minimize gambling mentality in the top 10. I don't care if you swing for the fences in round 3. Gambling with bad odds get teams in trouble. That's what happened during the later years of Tex Schram (SP). He started drafting "potential" and "reaches" in the late 1st........

Look at Steelers and Pat. I don't see them swing for fences especially during 1st 3 rounds. They take solid contributors every round. That's how you BUILD a team.

One HOF player won't make your team. I taken 6-8 solid starters over 1 HOF +1-2 startes + 4-5 busts any day.

USC website has him listed at 280 ;) . Watch the films of him playing. Maybe he carried the weight REALLY WELL but he looks very thin for a 280 lb guy.
