Tyron Smith Reportedly at 304 Lbs

IMO, we need a RT not a LT. Free played well at LT and will only get better.

Plus, it is much more likely that a rookie can come in and start on the right side than it is on the left side.

I still say go with the BPA as best you can. If the Cowboys think Smith is the best player still on the board, then go with him. If the best guy is a right tackle, then go that way. It is really nice to have a guy as versatile as Free where you can switch him wherever you want. That is key.

This goes without saying, but muscle weighs more than fat. This guy is solid muscle. I think with a good strength/conditioning coach, he could get to a good playing weight and dominate.

Lucky for us...we have a good S/C coach.

So where is the evidence of him playing at 270?

I don't see him playing at that weight, knew all reports were he played under 300 but 270 sounds ridiculous.

If you're talking about this link from the USC website: http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/smith_tyron00.html

That info was placed prior to the 2010 season. You can tell by the 2010 blurb: Smith, who played well in his first season as a starter in 2009, will look to build upon that showing as a junior right offensive tackle in 2010. He had surgery on his right thumb prior to 2010 spring practice.

What's interesting, just going by experience, is that college team websites are notorious for cooking up player heights/weights for the player's benefit. They had him listed at 280 (prior to the '10 season), but I would have to think they would have listed him at a few more pounds.

ESPN, who in this case should be an objective observer, has him listed at 291 lbs. http://tinyurl.com/4sfgswt

The point is ESPN would have no reason to fib and list Tyron at a heavier weight. The USC Trojan site, could have benefited Smith by listing him at an inflated weight, but didn't.

I guess we'll see what he looks like at the combine.

I thought the mention of him getting bull rushed by Jordan but handling him well at times was interesting. Nice evaluation of him.

I don't want to take a flier like Eagles did with Winston Justince or USC guy Brown from last year.

I think this team need someone who can contribute quickly not 1-2 years down the line especially when you are drafting in the top 10.

I gotcha and that may be a valid concern.

The question that needs to be considered is not so much what Smith might be in the NFL. The question you need to ask is what would Free do if you drafted a LT?

What would happen with Free if we signed Smith? Free is an FA looking for a contract. If we drafted a LT at 9, how would that affect Free? If I'm Doug Free, I'm thinking that I've already proven I can play LT in the NFL. Guaranteed that there are plenty of teams out there who would agree with him. If you draft Smith, that means that your drafting him to play LT. He can not play RT IMO. He's not strong enough, or big enough. Some of you may disagree and that's fine but I don't see it. If I'm Free, why would I sign with Dallas if I know your taking a LT at #9 overall? If your drafting him to be our RT, then your paying way too much for a RT IMO. Again, what would I think if I'm Free? I'm thinking that I would be considering leaving because nobody is going to sign me to LT money if the plan is for me to play RT. If I'm the Cowboys, I don't franchise him to play RT for top 5 LT money, which is what we would have to do. If I'm Free, there is no way I'm willing to settle for RT money when I know I can get LT money and be at the top of that wage scale. I don't think taking a Tackle at #9 is wise.

Smith is a huge wild card.
He is very young and extremely athletic but also just had surgery so maybe not a guy who can handle carrying 310+ easily.

At 275 or whatever he looked strong and quick against guys generally weighing 260. At the next level he'll face guys his size but with real speed and he'll also face guys 290+.

He has a ton of upside but is a gamble.

Juniors can really be scary.

There have been reports all over that he had a hard time keeping weight on. Now maybe when his body matures that will not be a problem but when might that be? Its a shame because he apparently has everything else you want in a tackle otherwise.

The Cowboys will probably draft a CB (Amukamara) or DE, so I wouldn't worry too much about drafting Smith if you don't like him, even though I would draft him. He could end up playing for the Giants or Eagles and blocking Ware and Spencer.

Dallas really doesn't evaluate offensive linemen in the draft very good or draft them very good or even draft them lately. Dallas really doesn't evaluate their own offensive linemen very well, because they are reluctant to change it and hesitant and slooooooow. It was reported that a Cowboys source doesn't think Smith is "ready to play". If that report is true, no wonder this line is in such terrible shape and no wonder the James Martens, Jacob Rodgers, Sam Youngs, Robert Brewsters, Cory Proctors, Joe Bergers, Pat McQuistans, E.J. Wheatleys, Al Johnsons, and Montrae Hollands of the world have provided zero starters. Who is evaluating the offensive line and the linemen in the draft? Other teams identify, draft, and can get offensive linemen on the field much faster and better than the Cowboys.

The Cowboys acted very naive when they traded down in 2009 and left Andy Levitre (see him tossing Steelers around like rag dolls and playing nasty at LG for the Bills) and Phil Loadholt on the board. Loadholt would have been a much better option than Colombo in 2009. It was the Vikings who took Loadholt and played him as a rookie while their DE ran under, around, and through Colombo. Plus, some people thought Colombo could still play after his 2nd major leg injury and after getting whipped by Ray Edwards in a divisional playoff game. Adams was booted, and Colombo was put in the sunshine and got a free pass. When has Jerry Jones ever drafted an offensive linemen in the first round?

The argument for drafting Smith at 9:

Two word argument for Smith:

Mark Colombo

Two word argument for drafting a DE:

Igor Olshansky

Two word argument for drafting a CB:

Terence Newman

Counter:

Terence Newman and a deep CB class/Mark Colombo and Doug Free and Igor Olshansky and three free agent DEs

Two word argument for drafting Quinn:

Anthony Spencer

Counter:

Anthony Spencer/Quinn character concerns/serious past medical/position change/can he play the run and cover like Spencer?/Mark Colombo, Igor Olshansky, and 3 free agent DEs

DE VS Smith

5 reasons to draft Smith at 9:

Romo
Witten
Austin
Bryant
Felix Jones

Counter:

The Eagles zone leak embarrassing Olshansky and Dallas' front 7. Igor likes to dance while getting dominated up front and embarrassed on national t.v. He likes to call out the offensive coordinator's play calling in the media, and that guy is the head coach now. Olshansky's 2010 tape would get him cut by most teams. Spears, Bowen, and Hathcer are free agents.

Counter for Smith:

Mark Colombo is the worst RT in the NFL, imo. Smith straight up blocked Cameron Jordan to at least a draw (as a junior), and Smith has more upside at his position and is only 20 years old. Smith is a LT, in the mold of D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who has RT experience. He's the best pass blocker in this draft and is a very good run blocker who can get Felix Jones in space and on the edge and to the second level on a consistent basis. Smith's strength, athleticism, and wide base is exactly the type of attributes that Dallas needs and should want on it's old and fading fast offensive line.

Again, Tyron Smith is a potential franchise LT with RT experience and is 20 years old. He is 7 years younger than Free, and he is a much better athlete with big time upside and more much more upside than Free. If Free gets hurt, who is going to LT? Brewster? Young? Davis? Your CB at number 9? Your DE at 9? Your team is done! Is Free even going to be here in 2011? This is a weak offensive tackle free agent class, and if you pass on Smith or Sherrod, you will not only miss out on the top 6 OTs, you will most likely miss out on the top interior offensive linemen as well.

Tyron Smith should be in the mix at 9, and he better be with this offensive line. How many times has Mark Colombo imploded in a divisional playoff game? 2 Watch three guys block Micheal Strahan on Romo's last effort pick against the Giants in 2007. Jason Witten was one of them. That worked out well.

When will you be in another position to draft an OT with this much talent and ability? If you pass on him, you might get another chance next year when you are back in the top 10. Except, he will not be there. He is coming out now. Spears, the last first round DE is about to walk, and Dallas really doesn't care.

I might be going down on this one, but I'm going down swinging.

Tyron Smith could be the cornerstone of Dallas' offensive line for the next 12 years. The Eagles drafted Tra Thomas at 11, and he was the cornerstone at LT for 11 years and made Pro Bowls.

Drafting an offensive linemen at 9 (Smith) is a safe, solid investment that could pay big dividends to your football team in the short and long runs.

An investment in Smith is an investment straight into the bank accounts of Romo, Witten, Austin, Bryant, and Felix Jones. It is an investment that replaces the weakest starting player on your team or for sure weakest player on offense. The offensive skill players are the biggest strength on the team. There are no first round safeties to replace Ball.

A 20 year old potential franchise LT, in the mold of D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who has extensive RT experience...

It couldn't be put on a tee any better for the Cowboys, so I'm not holding my breath.

The Patriots didn't care how other draft experts or how other teams rated Jerod Mayo. They took the junior at 10, and he became an All Pro.

The Chiefs didn't care how draft people or how other teams viewed Tyson Jackson, they took him at 4.

The Falcons didn't care how draft people or how other teams rated Sam Baker; they traded back into round 1 and secured their LT.

All of these teams were in the playoffs last year. The Falcons made it two out of three. The Chiefs made it for the first time under Haley.

They drafted players who fit their systems and stuck to their plan. They didn't listen to other teams or draft people.

Dallas needs to reevaluate how they evaluate offensive linemen coming out of the draft. The need to reevaluate their expectations for these players. Dallas' mindset of rating offensive linemen is flawed and ancient by current NFL standards, imso.

The heat is really on Garrett and Houck in this regard, because the scouts and front office are not getting it done on this front.

Question one:

Do you like D'Brickashaw Ferguson?

The Patriots, Chiefs, and Falcons build teams. They don't just collect talent. They have an inside out philosophy, and I bet that they wouldn't even consider drafting a CB outside of Peterson at 9. I bet that if their offensive line was in such horrendous shape, they would draft an OT at 9 if one had a first round grade and was a perfect fit for their system. The Chiefs and Falcons have first round OTs. It would be between OT and DE, imo. I think the Patriots should have drafted Dez Bryant, but I'm glad that they didn't.

I don't really disagree with you on the principle of drafting an OT early, but Tra Thomas and Ferguson were much more of a sure thing than Smith is. Neither of those guys had many concerns.

Smith might be a good one, but there are a lot of questions for a top 10 OT. At least there are in my opinion.

If they didnt have many concerns then they would have went higher in the draft.
Every rookie has a problem or a weak point in there game Thats just the way of life and its the NFL coaches that help shield those weak points and for smith his coach is woick (sp).

Honestly, I really like this T draft class. Smith, Bolder, and Carimi are all pretty high on my list

Higher that 4th overall for Ferguson and 11th overall for Thomas? You can't get a whole lot higher than that.

Guys who go 11th typically have very few questions surrounding them, and the guys getting picked 4th overall have even fewer.

As for Smith having the same kind of weak points like everyone else... well, being too weak and skinny isn't something that you see a lot of people worrying about with offensive tackles.

He might eventually be a pro bowler, but there are a lot of questions about the guy that would keep me from using a top 10 pick on.

Tra Thomas was still considered a blue chip player. Tyron Smith nowhere compares coming out. But one thing about Tra Thomas, the Cowboys took Flozell in the 2nd round in the same draft. Flo turned out to be every bit as good a player. More pro bowls and and same amount all pro.

Flo would have been a All Pro RT ala Erik Williams....decent LT but a dominant RT.

It would be clear to all that picking smith would be to have him play at LT sooner or later. Free would then look elsewhere. I think Free is a very good LT but could be an excellent RT. But the money at LT is so much better there is no way he accepts it.
