Herb Dean and Steve Mazzagatti have been officially appointed as referee’s for the UFC’s landmark UFC 100 pay-per-view next month.
Dean will be in charge of the main event at UFC 100 which sees current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar take on interim title-holder Frank Mir in a heavyweight title unification match.
Mazzagatti will referee the welterweight title fight between champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Thiago Alves.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer confirmed the appointments to MMAJunkie.com.
Mazzagatti has recently come in for criticism from UFC president Dana White, who has stated on more than one occasion that he has been unhappy with the referee’s performances.
But Mizer said: “I don’t know why Steve’s got such a bad rap from Dana.
“All I can think of is Steve, as a fireman, he has paramedic training. I think compared to the other referees, he probably knows better if a guy is hurt or not.”
Kizer also confirmed that Mario Yamasaki and Yves Lavigne will take charge of additional bouts on the UFC 100 card.
Dean and Mazzagatti will also work this Saturday’s The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas along with Josh Rosenthal and Kim Winslow.
UFC 100 takes place on Saturday, July 11 with a battle of the TUF coaches also featuring on the card as Dan Henderson takes on Michael Bisping.
Mir is so screwed now. he's not gonna get saved by the ref this time.
