He beat GSP by KO one time and lost the other fight which is much better than what Penn did. He lost a very close decision to Hughes unlike Penn who was KOed. The only reason he has not fought alot is because he had a major back surgery and needed to heal. Serra if he was able to make weight comfortably, he would give Penn all he could handle and alot of fans felt he actually beat Penn what they faced off. I'm not one of them, but Serra is very skilled on both the stand up and on the ground.
Penn also has beaten Hughes by submitting him so I think Penn faired better against Hughes.
Serra faired better against GSP cause he got the KO, for sure, but it's not like Penn was swiss cheese against GSP the first time either. He beat him up pretty badly in the first round of that fight. GSP just squeaked by with what he did in rounds 2 and 3 but then again the second time they faced GSP absolutely dominated Penn.
I can see, I guess, why people would want to give Serra a shot, given the options in the 155 division, but I'm just not a big fan of giving guys shots that they've done absolutely nothing to earn and Matt Serra is exactly that.
He's lost 2 of his 3 fights he's had since winning the Ultimate Fighter. Let that sink in as well. He's fought only 3 times since then. I know he had the back issue, and I sympathize with that, but he should have gotten taken care of long ago instead of dragging it out so long that he wound up fighting 3 fights over a 2 and a half year span cause he couldn't get healthy.
Matt Serra has had his one moment in the sun. He wasn't that good prior to the Ultimate Fighter show, which is the exact reason he was even on it in the first place was to get a second shot at being back in the UFC, and he's not been that good since winning it.
I honestly just don't see the merits in giving him a 155 title shot.
