Anyone built one of these? I am considering it.

I might do one like this, but in a Dallas Cowboys theme. I figure I can do it all for around $150.

I would probably blow my house up trying to build something like that. Props.

It's very simple. Just requires the drum, various nuts and bolts, a step drill bit, and some miscellaneous grill parts.

Make darn sure the drum is clean, or that you know what it contained previously. A few years back, when the 55 gal. drum BBQ pits got real popular, some nefarious producers were using drums that had stored hazardous chemicals in them.

Great project. I made a garbage can smoker for a Fourth of July weekend a few years back. The setup means you have to have your charcoal right because moving charcoal from the perimeter of the can into the fire is a pain, and adding lump mid-smoke is not an option. Unless there's a hatch in the back of the drum we're not seeing.

I messed up the amount of lump I'd need, got the fire too hot, and oxidized the zinc oxide coating on the galvanized trashcan. Ruined a 6 pound pork butt. Grrr.

I knew it was going to be this, or a really disturbing post lol

Yeah, I don't mess with galvanized stuff in anything that goes near cooking food. From what I understand, if the charcoal basket is designed properly, these things can go 16+ hours on one load of charcoal.

Why not just get one of these? $200 at Bass Pro Shops. Propane, no fooling with charcoal or that nonsense.

I got one recently and its way better than a charcoal smoker. Easier to maintain temp, and works great by getting a bigger water pan, and a 12" cast iron skillet for the wood chips/lumps. The skillet seems to help keep the temp at a more even level.

Propane? Propane? Who said anything about propane?

Me.

What I posted was about a propane smoker. No need for charcoal or wood. Just wood chips, or chunks. Its easier to maintain a level temp = better results.

That was supposed to be in my Jim Mora voice.

Gotcha.

I was skeptical and really never considered a propane smoker. But I went on the recommendation of someone who has had his for 7 yrs and loves it.

I like smoking meat. Propane is cheating.

Seems like a bit of overkill. I assume the vertical yellow pipes w/ the ball valves are the air intakes? I'd be kinda skeptical those work very well. The diameter seems kinda small. Are there 2 matching ones on the opposite side?

Here's my two favorite "drum-smoker" designs.
