Okay, the smart thing to say is that we don't care about our preseason record; we just want to come out of it healthy; these games mean nothing.

All of that is true, but with the depth we have in the secondary, at RB, along the DL and OL, and the youth at WR and TE...this could very easily be an undefeated preseason as our depth wins games against other teams' scrubs; however, the thinnest spot on the team is QB.

If Brad Johnson doesn't shine playing with our backups against other teams' backups, and if Bartel doesn't flash some real potential in mop-up duty during the preseason, I won't be surprised at all if we don't start looking for another backup QB or developmental guy as the preseason cuts are made.

Brad Johnson and Bartel are going to be playing with a pretty good group of backups, and they will have the benefit of playing opposite our defense which is extremely deep at every position...these guys need to have very solid preseasons or there's no reason to expect them to serve us well when the season begins.

I'll certainly being looking for a good showing from our secondary, but other than that it should be like any other.

If the team is winning before the starters are subbed out, I'll count it as a win, regardless of whether it's only the first quarter, halftime, etc. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if we finished undefeated for the reasons you've described.

Only game in the pre-season I really hope we win is the 3rd game because

A: Im going

B: Its a dress rehearsal game

C: Its for the Govenuhs Cup

Just once I want to see a pre-season game with no kicking involved except onside kick attempts. Practice going for 2. Practice going for it on 4th and long.

It'll never happen of course.

I don't care about an undefeated preseason. All I care about is the team emerging from the preseason with no serious injuries.

And if we lose that game those of us who live in Houston will have to listen about how great the Texans are and how they are SB bound. :laugh2:
Funny thing is when Dallas has beaten Houston in Pre-season and their fans comment on Dallas winning I just tell them "It's just pre-season" I never make a big deal out of winning pre-season games.

It depends upon talent and scheme. If the one team plays vanilla but the other tests out new wrinkles you can't get a true indication of play. I like to watch individual matchups more than anything. Does Amendola get seperation on press coverage even though Johnson checks down? Does Stanback round off his cuts or look lost? etc.

Yeah bragging about winning in the pre-season is one notch worse than the Commanders bragging about beating us in week 17 last year :bang2: .

AMEN!!

Drawing conclusions from preseason wins and losses is very dangerous business.

Even looking at individual player performances can be very tricky. I'll still do it of course, but I will take it all with a very large grain of salt.

Agreed about the backup QBs. I posted in the thread about which five players you want to look at Saturday, and one of mine is Brad Johnson. I'm really anxious to see if he looks like he can hold the fort down for a game or two.

Reminds me of the Rams when they were "the greatest show on turf". Their kicker went down and they just went for everything, 4th downs, two point conversions, everything. They made it more often than not too.

Texans will probably play their starters vs. our third teamers so as to "beat" us... So they might win that one.

Might.

Some may disagree but it's important to learn how to "WIN" yes, even in
preseason.......It all starts tomorrow night.

What about the kickers trying to win a job?

Interesting comments all throughout the thread, but I really didn't expect to see almost all the comments about the W-L record in the preseason. Everyone wants to win every preseason game...to say anything different is being a little disingenuous, I think, but it's not really important to win them all...it's much more important to come out of the preseason healthy and prepared.

The part of the original post that I expected the most feedback on was the idea that we should be expecting excellent performances out of Brad Johnson and Bartel because they will probably be surrounded by a better cast than the opposing QB's due to our depth. To me, the preseason will show us that we can trust Johnson as the backup and Bartel as a solid #3, or it will show us that neither is prepared for his role and needs to be replaced.

How do you guys feel about that position, given the quality of guys they will be leading on the field as compared with past years?

I always think it's hard to judge pre-season games as a fan, because the opposing team may decide to play their starters longer, or they may game plan a bit, or they may get very aggressive in their blitz schemes.

As an example, when the Skins beat the Colts in the HOF game, Madden several times said the Skins must really want to win this game because they are actively blitzing. And this was in the 2nd Half when the FA O Lineman, reserves, etc. hadn't really prepared for those types of blitzes.

I'm sure some of you guys probably heard that comment as well if you watched the game as Madden said it several times.

My point being, in pre-season, you're not necessarily comparing apples to apples.

I just want our first team/key role players to execute well on both offense and defense, minimize penalties and turnovers, and I'd like to see something from the guys on the bubble and our rookies. If we're executing well with our main guys, I'll be pretty happy.

And I definitely want to see a well disciplined team.
