That’s a point that most people miss. Football is entertainment. All 4 SB losses under Levy were successful seasons and very entertaining…..until the SB losses. Two of those years were VERY entertaining for Cowboys fans.
If it’s SB or bust, then 31 teams’ fans are going to be miserable every year. I hear the same thing in all sports: ‘The regular season doesn’t matter! Did we win a championship?’
I’ve been a Cowboys and Braves fan since the 60’s. The regular season absolutely matters. It blows worse than anything when my teams are not competitive during the regular season. Of course I want championships, but I’m not going to lose my mind if my teams don’t get one. Well, unless the Braves don’t get one this year. That would be a travesty on the order of the Cowboys jacking up a season after going 13-3.
It can be more complicated than that.
Here in Tampa, our baseball Rays seem constant underdogs. Small market, small budget often small crowds. A stadium future in disarray.
When we make the playoffs and win some we're thrilled.
On the other hand, our powerhouse hockey Lightening? We expect them to go deep or win it...however...we adore them so much it's okay if we don't.
My Cowboys....making the playoffs...I EXPECT IT! Tradition, excellence. I'm disappointed when we don't, disappointed when we get kicked out right away.
So there are many aspects to this...the sense of community.... sensibilities? Expectations? Not sure what it's called.
