Your memory deceives you. Gurode was long gone by 2013.

At any rate, you were likely one of the few who was happy to see him drafted at #31. Most thought it was a terrible reach. Shows what the average draftnik knows.

Turned out it wasn't a reach at all but I thought we could've easily gotten him in the second round and in the process add one more pick instead of taking the 32nd or whatever in the first. I did love the pick of the player, huge fan, I was just being greedy. At the time Jerry said they wanted to take him in the first because of the fifth year option teams get on first rounders that thesaid don't second rounders. I don't think that ended up really mattering as we were going to give him a big payday before his rookie contract was up anyway. Oh well, we got a fantastic player who is a cornerstone with a late first round pick and with how many busts there are it's hard to complain about hitting on a pick regardless of the position of the player and pick.

I thought I would share this comprehensive, in-depth review of the best center in the league:

http://insidethepylon.com/nfl/teams...owboys/2017/06/12/icroscope-travis-frederick/

It's a tremendous, detailed analysis that shows why our guy is the best at what he does. This is the level of detail and information that I truly appreciate and I hope you all do too.
i remember his pick well. my first thought was "who the hell" as he wasn't supposed to go that high. but since it was focusing on the OL and that had been my battle cry for the last decade, i went and did some homework and he was listed as the best C in the draft. when i read that i felt much better about the pick despite all the experts in here saying what a crap move it was.

I was talking about watching Gurode on replays during the Wade era and being disgusted by his play. I never saw Phil Costa as the answer (couldn't stay healthy anyway), but Gurode was a nightmare to watch with his mind boggling decisions and not know what the play was. Furthermore, Kosier had to make the line calls.

Costa's inability to stay healthy and then the disaster that was 2012 when we couldn't keep any center healthy rendered any argument a moot point because I cannot expect a 6th string center to be good. I really questioned if the Cowboys would ever draft a center high again and when they drafted Frederick who came from Wisconsin, I was delighted.

The problem for Frederick is while his 10-yard and 40-yard splits were slow, he could have made that up with his bench press. But, Wisconsin utilizes a different weight training program as Joe Thomas' bench press reps were mediocre as well.

I actually believe that any good player in the NFL can have some sort of measurable that explains why they are good. The problem is that the combine only measures a limited amount of variables. And that's how players like Frederick get downgraded after the combine.

YR

how ANYONE thought Costa would ever be a quality NFL player is beyond me.

Cause he was a young player and had a couple good games against Suh and Ngata. When a young player has good games against elite talent I take note.

As it was he hurt his back such that he could not play anymore. He was not run out of the league like Nick Hayden.

Ngata injured his knee early in that game; so that meant nothing.

And I disagree with how well he did with Suh. Suh has down games where he does not put in all that much effort.

Costa never had it and never would have had it.

I remember defending this pick while people lost their minds because they thought he was a reach. Oh no, some internet "expert" bozos think he's a 2nd rounder and he went at the absolute butt end of the first, quelle horreur!

Full disclosure, I'm wrong about the draft all the time like everybody else. BUT NOT THIS TIME :p

And there had been a run on the O line at the time of our pick; we had him rated as the #1 center in the draft and we badly needed one. So the pick was a true no brainer. Sometimes people get all hung up in the 'value' bs and forget it is in the end about getting talent.

He hurt it on a play engaged with Costa. And of course you disagree but that was Costa drive blocking and otherwise stoning Suh.

and of course you are never wrong. So Ngata got hurt and you credit Costa. Nice. Well great brain answer me this?

What team did costa go to when we cut him? If he was as good as YOU claim he was....

I've admitted being wrong many times. Make a good argument and you will see it again. Your issue is poor hackneyed arguments.

Costa was dominating Ngata then Ngata got hurt while being blocked by Costa. He dominated Suh against Detroit. Those are facts.

And Costa hurt his back and was out of the league. Ever heard of a career ending injury? And I had already pointed that out and blithely going with that argument anyway is pretty poor form.
