Underachieved or Overrated?

All year we've been telling you guys, we won't be true contenders until we can stop the run and our QB can make plays when it matters and not turn the ball over.

My opinion won’t be liked because most fans believe the media about our OL and overall roster talent, but I think both our offense and defense over-achieved.

Our offense managed to score lots of points and win lots of games and get the #2 seed, despite virtually no run game all season; despite a slow start with a new OC; despite a defense that could never stop a team pinned down deep which would give the offense good field position. Qualifiers- we had an easy schedule and dominated our division because two teams sucked, and the defense did add to our point totals with pick sixes.

Our defense played a part in many wins with pick-sixes, dominating most games against lesser OLs with sacks when we had a lead, despite getting poor pass rush push inside; despite losing our best CB for the season; despite an almost total inability to stop the run because of weak DT play, no LBs (certainly no thumpers, not even an early down LB), with a secondary that beat their brains out all year making tackles on tough RBs in the secondary every game; and despite a DC who is great like his defense as a front-runner rushing the QB, but panics when he can’t stop the run and plays defenses that are not sound.

This team should have been playing in the NFCCG game. So in that sense, they underachieved by not even making it out of WC weekend, getting smoked by an inferior team.

But on the flipside, you had fans and pundits who thought we were a legit SB contender. We were not. In that sense, we were clearly overrated.

Both. Underachieving in the playoffs because the Pack is 100% a beatable team. Overrated because we faced a fairly soft schedule when it was all said and done. We beat up a lot of bad defensive teams. The good defensive teams we beat had really bad offenses.

Both but we should have been having this discussion at least a week from today at the earliest. They should have advanced today no matter how overrated and flawed they were. They were spanked by a young team that couldn’t even beat Tampa a few weeks ago.

Blocking out the noise, it's time to be honest with ourselves. Seriously, let's think about it:

Are the Cowboys really that good, stats aside? The Eye Test:

- Was this defense dominant at any time, or did they just have good stretches when they got turnovers in bunches?
- Was the pass rush ever truly dominant as all the pundits seem to say? They had a few stretches when the pass rush was impressive, but in November and December, how often did the Dee Line simply take over the game?
- Yes, the offense was impressive, at times, but just because Dak lead the league in TDs doesn't mean this offense was good all season, right?

Did the pundits and fans overrate this team (which I think happens often for Cowboys teams)?

Or were the players actually very good, and they just underachieved?

Or could both be true?

And for the coaches too:

Did McCarthy underachieve with this offensive roster?

Did Quinn underachieve this with this defensive roster?

The season was over after they got blown out by SF from that point on, i never bought in, the buffalo debacle just reinforced what I already knew

So if this team is overrated, maybe we cut them a little slack.

Maybe they overachieved based on the quality of the players on the roster. Could it be that we were all just a bit too optimistic, especially given Quinn's and McCarthy's histories?
