These two are the ones I thought of before I even clicked on this thread.

Sinise nails it every time and Ed Harris is able to make me love the guy or hate him depending on his character.

I would love to see a movie with those two and Jon Voight as well. All three great actors that don't get the recognition they deserve for their craft.

Sinise and Harris were both in Apollo 13

Gary Sinise steals every movie he is in.

Brian Dennehy does too.

I also find myself really drawn to Edward James Olmos. I've always wondered why he wasn't more acclaimed.Edward Norton pulls off some great characters.

For actresses, I think Whoopi Goldberg never does a bad role. Her character in Ghost stole the movie.

I love almost anything that Diane Lane is in and I think she is very underrated in a lot of ways.

A favorite of mine is Sally Field. At one time she was very acclaimed with some powerful roles as Sybil and Norma Rae, but then a lot of smaller roles that I think she was every bit as good in.

He is great but his hideous complexion probably works against him.

Steve Buscemi is underrated as is John Malkovich

Christopher Walken too

Is that the Ray Liotta effect?

I have trouble being a fan of Dennehy ever since I found out he lied about his involvement in Viet Nam. I know it seems silly, but I can't seem to separate that from his work.

I think Ed Burns has done a great job during his film career, but I don't really hear much about him.

Eward Norton is one of the best actors out there and I rarely see him get his due credit. His characters in "Primal Fear", "Fight Club" and "American History X" are some of the best in cinema history IMO.

Timothy Olyphant is another guy I really like. "Justified" is a great show and he's had several good cinematic showings.

Bryan Cranston, solely for playing the best television character in history.

Edward Norton comes to my mind too. That guy is just unreal.

I wouldn't say he's underrated, but more got his original popularity from his looks over his acting - but Leonardo DiCaprio has turned into an all-timer. The guy can play absolutely any role, and his attention to detail and preparation is unreal.

John Travolta.

I would not have thought he was under rated until he did not even make the Espn brackets 64.

if you look at his range from Welcome back Kotter, Grease, Saturday Night Fever and then he plays a great villian. pretty big range

I know nothing about this. Ironic that Stallone played a Viet Nam super vet despite being a draft dodger who taught women's soccer in Sweden to avoid that war, and Dennehy lied about Viet Nam and played a cop rousting a Viet Nam vet.

Wouldn't Stallone's disability (Bell's Palsy) have prevented him from serving?

Woody is one of my favorites

Basically the entire cast of Ironclad, which came out last year, is underrated.

Paul Giamatti
Brian Cox (well nowadays anyways)
Kate Mara
James Purefoy
Jason Flemyng

Purefoy was great as Marcus Antonius in Rome (as was Kieran Hinds as Caesar)

Giamatti is great too

Something about Gary Oldman that I always liked. He can look so different in so many roles but always pulls it off although he may look different in the roles he normally plays a guy that is kind of crazy.

However I am not sure that he is considered under rated so I don't know if he fits.

The guy who plays the cop in Dark Knight.
The problem with these picks is that Oldman is universally considered one of the best current actors. It's not that he's overrated, it's just that it's not possible for him to be underrated when he's held in such high regard by literally everyone that pays attention to such things.
