Biggest problem with this thread...most of them are not underrated.

Ed Norton is known as a great actor from his work.
Ed Harris the same.
Among several others.

I like the John Travolta pick because he is picked as someone that plays a role. But his work outside of that is better than most would ever expect. I still can't call him underrated though.

How about...

Mine would be

Philip Seymour Hoffman - I know he has won some awards, but is still underated in my book.

Sam Rockwell - Great in the movie Moon.

Bob Gunton - Best known as the warden in The Shawshank Redemption. Also was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor during Vietnam.

Charles Durning - Was good in the movie The Sting

Harry Dean Stanton - Played in Alien

Micheal Jeter - Played in Open Range and The Green Mile. Dead now but was still underrated in my book.

Robert Duvall - Same boat as Hoffman. Has won an Oscar and been nominated several times but his ability on screen is still under rated in my book. Really liked his character in Get Low

Sam Rockwell

He was awesome as Will Bill in "The Green Mile". He also rocked in "Moon".

Edit: Ha. Looks like I was beat by mere seconds.

Wouldn't Stallone's disability (Bell's Palsy) have prevented him from serving?

wiki says his facial nerve problems came from incorrect use of forceps during his birth

Aside from a few mentioned here (Sinise, Norton and Harris do not count as they are pretty big names), I will add a few from left field:

James Spader (prev mentioned)-he has a vocal tick, speech that is endearing to watch

Christian Slater-always wondered why he did not get bigger films, he really is a good actor

Lou Diamond Phillips-not so much for his acting skills, but he has a great attitude and a nice guy

Gene Hackman-I guess he is not underrated, just wanted to mention him, prob one of my fav actors of all-time.

P. Diddy (puff or just diddy now)-for being a rapper and not an actor, he does add value to his roles in films and tv series he appears in

William H. Macy-can he even be considered underrated or just a B list actor?

Yes, he's underrated IMO.

One from way back is Jack Elam.

Michael K. Williams, who plays Omar in The Wire, is also really good. I don't know anything else he's in lol, but I think he's awesome in that.

I would love to see a movie with those two and Jon Voight as well. All three great actors that don't get the recognition they deserve for their craft.
Jon Voight is one of my favorite actors, but he has 4 academy award nominations. He's one of the most acclaimed living actors.

In between domestic assaults, drug binges, and prison stints, Tom Sizemore is a fantastic actor.

I think that's what a lot of these names are. Not underrated, just b-list character actors. Nothing wrong with that. They'll never headline the movie, but they're always there. Luis Guzman, WH Macy, PS Hoffman, etc.

I'd like to throw Mos Def into the mix. Better known as a rapper, but that guy can act as good as anyone. Great in Monster's Ball and Dexter.

I believe every character these guys play. I know they're underrated because I had to look up two of them just to get their names. Look up the ones you don't know and I bet you'll immediately think of a movie they were great in:

1. Richard Farnsworth (deceased)

2. David Strathairn

3. Bruce McGill

4. Stephen Root

5. Rick Schroeder
