Underwhelmed by Canty

Just finished watching Calico's great vids. All Canty did was shadowbox all night with the left tackle. No penetration, leaving him miles away from the QB. Yes, it's early, but let's refrain fron the "we got a steal" hysteria. I think he might be better suited for DT.

It was suggested that since he had to remain physically inactive for a long time after his knee and eye injury, and only cleared for practice on Aug 7 or 8, (I forget which), he hit the rookie wall fast.

Makes sense to me...his detached retina meant he could do virtually nothing to endanger it further.

To me, it's amazing his instincts allowed him to offset what had to be relatively poor conditioning as much as they did.

He'll catch back up.

A DE's job in the 3-4 isn't to get after the QB.

And I saw Canty make an excellent play on a running play.

I wouldn't expect Sacks from Canty. Although what was impressive about him from his college career was his number of tackles. Ussually lineman in a 3-4 don't rack up the tackles like he did. He is a big kid though who should get a nice push on each play and will be very hard to move out of the hole. He will do a lot of the grunt work so guys like Ware and Burnett can make the plays.

If he can stay healthy, both Spears and Canty have a chance to be excellent down the road. Their play should compliment each other very nicely.

I agree with LTN. But, I think we were foolish to think he would replace ellis in the preseason.

Exactly. His primary job is to keep the linemen off the LB's, and clobber any back that comes near him. I am sure that he is hampered by the time missed in preseason... may take a while for him to hit full stride.

Watching the game last night Canty was in on several plays and did considerably more than shadowbox. He actually had a pretty decent night for a guy coming off a long layoff and getting into the camp action late. It is pretty common knowledge that Canty "hit a wall" as Parcells put it but it in no way is an indication that he will not be able to surmount that wall.

When we drafted him many of us thought that he might even be on IR this year (basically Red Shirted) and that he was going to be a long term project. The fact that he is seeing the field at all puts us ahead of the game with him and he still has the potential to play at a very high level; possibly this year. So before we go writing him off as a bust before he ever gets into a regular season game would it not behoove us to see what the kid can produce with a little more time in the system and some more practice reps?

Isn't this the second time that you have posted this same theme? Is there some particular reason that you seem to have this negativity toward Canty? Does he have some character flaw of physical flaw that the rest of us do not know about?

I saw Canty get some penetration on the highlights. He didn't make any big plays but he did his job and he kept containment. That was his responsibility. All that said, with time he will be a steal. I think we wil all be pleased with Canty.

All Canty did was shadowbox all night with the left tackle.

That is what 3-4 ends do. Some games they will not have any tackles or sacks and still do a great job. Linebackers make the plays in a 3-4

yeah, i have to take a bit of offense (nothing personal) about the negative remarks - seein as how i live in UVA country. Canty dropped so far because every team in the league knew if he even played this year they would be fortunate. this is aside from any character doubts from the bar incident.
this guy can play. he needs to learn the defensive alignments better, get a good feel for how the others around him play their positions, and guard himself against further injury. oh, and he still has a ways to go before he's in any condition to withstand serious playing time.
give him a break - everyone agrees he was possible first round talent that slipped to us due to the reasons stated above. that he can even get on the field this year is gravy - that he can actually have some impact in games is more than we had hoped for. he'll be more and more of a force as the season progresses, and around week 8 when he can start to really contribute, we should all be thankful we got him...

Well, besides for the fact that keeping the tackle engaged is what he's supposed to do as a 3-4 end, he also has been unable to really do the things necessary for football conditioning for close to a year. Let the guy workout and condition hardcore for a month or two before we declare him a bust. He was working over our O-linemen in 1 on 1s, so i'm sure he's going to be just fine.

Canty is a powerful guy, but I don't think anyone called him the second coming of Charles Haley at end. If he can wear out a LT so that someone else can reap the benefits, more power to him. We need some rotation guys who can beat up the opponents.

I don't know, I must be watching different game then some people. I thought the kid looked good....again.

He makes tackles all over the field, put pressure on at times and was stout vs the run except on the 55 yarder where he got sucked inside.

He is fine.

Calico doesn't show every play, so I may have missed some impressive moments. Still, it seems his height would be better utilized at DT, where he could knock down a pass or two. Of course, a 4-3 would suit him better, but that ain't us anymore.

FYI, he was an innocent bystander and got hit by a bottle thrown from across the room. There are no character issues.
