If you sign Suh to a 100M contract you are saying goodbye to at least 1 of 3 out of Dez, Martin, or Fredbeard. I'd rather sign my in-house guys instead.
I think it more likely results in the star system we had in the 90's. It started great but ended with diamonds surrounded by trash, no depth and 1/3 of the cap getting occupied by dead money. Maybe we'd have to sacrifice Fred the way we lost Stepnoski, but I think it's more likely the middle tier guys we lose.
But let's say you're right. If we drafted a defensive player that turned out to be great, or Lawrence or Crawford became great, wouldn't that put us in the exact same situation? Is the goal to not add great players on defense?
A $100m contract is a $100m contract. What does it matter to the cap if the player was drafted by us or another team.
Also, couldn't we say we made room for Suh when we cut Ware? Seems like a pretty even swap cap-wise.
