In retrospect, it proved to be, yes.

If it wasn't, Ware would still be here.

Based on your question, are you in the "Yes' camp when it comes to paying Suh $15 million per year?

Why do you say that it proved to be a bad thing?

Suh will end up staying with the Lions. He may be owed 12 mill this season but next year is only 3, HC wants him to remain in Det and I think they will extend his contract

I'm in Camp Yes in that I'm not against paying a star defensive line free agent $15m per year. Whether it's Suh or not doesn't matter. If Demarcus Lawrence starts putting up 13+ sack seasons, he's going to cost a $100m+ to sign when his contract is up in 3 years.

This is not address to me, but Suh is a more consistent game changer than Ware.

Ware had his share of highlight plays and a few games that he really blew up, but Suh causes problems down after down. He makes the other 10 guys on defense better.

I don't disagree with that, but again I would ask the question:

Would you be comfortable paying the man $15 million per year and likely $100 million overall?

Why do you say that it proved to be a bad thing?

Because they ultimately saw fit to release the player and discontinue with the deal, at a time when they really needed pass rush help.

And incurred significant dead money in the process.

That's not success.

I don't follow. It is my understanding that his contract voids 5 days after the Superbowl and the Lions will owe him nothing as he will be a free agent.

OK, thanks for clarifying your position.

Yeah, mine too. And the Lions tagging him would cost them $26.7 million.

He is hitting the open market.

the base is 12 mill with a 6.2 restructuring bonus. Det HC Jim Caldwell has said he wants Suh back and I expect they will get him resigned.

His contract is up, there's no remaining money owed, I have no idea what you're looking at. He'll soon be a free agent able to sign anywhere.

The player has zero incentive to pass up an opportunity at free agency.

The Lions can say whatever they want on the subject, they don't have the ability to do anything about it.

Sorry that was 2014 portion of the contract, however Jim Caldwell has said they do intend to resign Suh.

Because of injury and we also kept changing schemes and coaches. Suh has way more of an impact as well. We haven't seen pressure up the middle since forever.

I don't think we build our defense by overpaying for a possible problem child like Suh.

We'll do what we did on OL: sign value veterans (Mincey and McClain are the equivalents of Livings and Bernadeau), build through the draft, and maybe take a shot at a talented aging vet a-la Brian Waters if one becomes available. Maybe, because we're in better cap position now, we'll sign a mid-level guy or take a chance on a talented but troubled player if we think he could fit in. I could see us signing a young player who's underrated but still expensive, too, but that's probably a stretch. What I can't see is us breaking the bank on a premium veteran free agent.

Even with Romo's age, I think we're determined to do everything the right way. Chances are better we'll try to stock the QB position group and develop players while addressing defense to stay competitive instead of pushing our chips to the center of the table to make a run now. And that's what I prefer: build an organization that does the right things to stay competitive over time. You never know when the start might align if you're in position to take advantage of it. That's a safer way to build a contender than trying to go all-in in a specific season or two.

I think Lions wanting him back does mean something, not all FA will be leaving their teams, how much do the Lions want him and his asking price means a lot. Now let me ask how the hell does Dallas pay for him? Lions cap space is better than ours and the fact Dez is going to cost us I seriously doubt the Cowboys will be looking to as people love to say Break the Bank on Suh

I don't think Suh is a problem child. A problem child is a guy that doesn't come to play or sits out, because of not being satisfied with money or skipping practices. Suh just vents out his nasty on the opponent.
