It is self-inflicted, and he deserves all of the criticism he gets--especially when he makes guarantees and then plays a direct role in not delivering on them. But he puts himself out there and isn't afraid to talk a little trash. I think that stuff can help a team under the right circumstances. It certainly makes the run-up to the games more interesting.

I've never been a fan of trash-talking so that probably influences my opinion on it.

I would add that I doubt what Patrick Crayton says has a huge impact on the majority of the team. He's a journeyman role player and I doubt his word carries much clout.

As long as the guy's a starter, he's got the right to speak his mind in my book. He's had a couple of game winning plays in his time here that I can recall.

Keep in mind that he's a starter by default. He was last season due to Glenn's injury and would be this year for that same reason and the fact that the team to date hasn't been able to upgrade the position.

In that singular instance, I think you're exactly right. He laid an egg in the playoff game. It was worse, too, because he also talked smack about meeting the Patriots in the Superbowl, too.

He hasn't made a habit of playing small, though. In fact, he's generally been clutch for us. He absolutely embarrassed Sean Taylor and brought in the game-winner against the Commanders a few years back which was a huge play in a rivalry game. He had a big 4th down grab in that game, as well.

Crayton's a hard worker and a good player. He's got good hands and we're really lucky at this point that he's turned into a starter for us. I don't understand why people have such a problem with the guy.

Well said!!!

Not to mention verbally sparring with the Giants beforehand. Did you notice how players laughed when they commented on Crayton? Because he's not high enough on the food chain to be running his mouth and the players know it.

Hey, I sure hope that it was simply an isolated incident and not a trend. He's certainly brought more good than bad to the team.

It's his mouth!

How many times must that be said? If he would just shut up and play he wouldn't get the grief that he does.

Couple that with his gaffes at the worst possible time and you have a measure of resentment.

I'm willing to give him a clean slate for '08 if he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't talk like he's a better player than he actually is.

Thats the key right there.....

Its one thing to have an emotional leader ala a Joey Porter, Brian Dawkins or Ray Lewis whose intensity rubs off on everyone else spout off every once in a while , but when your #3 WR starts talking like he has done something in the league , it makes himself and his team look like a bunch of wanksta's....

I don't like talk that's aimed at a particular player, but the team:team stuff I think is just good fun.

There's no sin in being behind a healthy TO and TG. He's the starter by design this year, and if he improves on his game again he'll be a very respectable #2 for us. There's a reason why the team hasn't felt the urgency to upgrade his position to-date.

Was this after the playoff loss? I know Jacobs had his share of personal comments aimed at Crayton after game 2. That's the stuff I don't like to hear. Anything they said to him after the playoff game he had coming. I remember the Patriots mocking TO's popcorn after the regular season loss, so I don't think the mockery had anything to do with PC spot on the food chain.

Maybe it comes with the QB personality, but I get the sense PC's not about to shut up. He doesn't strike me as a dumb player, though, so perhaps he'll be smarter about picking his shots this year. I doubt he wants his slate cleaned this season, though. He's probably pretty happy with his body of work to-date, and any fan that can't get past one inopportune drop isn't paying careful attention to details anyway.

I'm sure the topic will come up in his chat session. I just hope our fans don't embarrass themselves given the opportunity.

What's a healthy TG?

And I think the team has felt the urgency to upgrade. They've been denied thus far.

No, the laughing at him did. Like Freddie Mitchell talking before the Super Bowl. Some players need to 'know their place' in the league's pecking order. Like Mitchell, Crayton didn't.

If Crayton goes the same route, he'll deservedly get the same grief. It's his choice.

I worry the same for Crayton himself.

I'll be interested to see the transcript.....

Healthy Terry Glenn. See: start of last year's training camp. Ie, the reason why Crayton was unexpectedly elevated to a starting role. Prior to last year, there was no harm in being behind our healthy starters. This year, the team is clearly ok going into the season with Crayton and TO. You can conclude this team has had an urgency and has been denied. Me, I'm comfortable believing that if they felt they needed to do something, they would have.

Please. Crayton was laughed at b/c he said some stupid things. It doesn't have to do with his place in the league.

The exception to this was Jacobs, who said to the press that Crayton 'sucks.' That's straight-up low class and was undeserved.

You should spend less time worrying and more time appreciating the fact that the player is willing to share his opinions with you. He doesn't have to subject himself to chat-room idiocy. I probably wouldn't in his shoes.

Opinions obviously differ then.

Regardless of the reason why, if he hadn't opened his mouth , he wouldn't subject himself or his team to being laughed at.

No argument on Jacobs being low class, but Crayton brought it on himself by talking.

Crayton's not doing me any favors doing the chat. I could truly care less if he did or didn't. I'm not holding him in reverance because he's 'lowering himself' to talk to the masses who help pay his salary.

The only thing that concerns me is whether or not he puts his foot in his mouth again.

I'm curious but doesn't he have to have played, you know, for other teams to be a journeyman? Cause, by my count, he's only played for one team his whole career, thus far, and will be there another 3-4 at least. That's hardly journeyman.

I'm looking forward to him improving even more this year. He's done it every single season he's been in the league, gotten better year by year, and I see no reason to believe that he won't do so again this year.

You both make valid points.

his best asset (his hands) failed him after his worst asset(his fat mouth) talked big.

He should stop trying to be someone he is not

try and improve on his route running as his 4.65 speed will only get him so far.

True and true.

Agreed.

That will elevate his game and status.

He's been productive for years,

is a good value,

The rest of your criticism is meritless.

True. True. True. See above.

I hope Crayton talks more this season. Personally, I like players to have confidence in themselves and in their team. And I like the back and forth between the Cowboys and the Giants right now. I do wish he'd get out of the prediction business.

No way. The percentages are against you if you are talking trash. Teams target you and get in your head more than ever.

No way do I want him "talking more"....

The ESPN First take episode just came on. He was very cool and very humble. No trash talk that I saw. I'll find the podcast later when they put it up.

Bobby Carpenter is to be on tomorrow.

"Not afraid" to talk trash sounds strange, as clowns aren't normally known for their courage. (Rodeo clowns, maybe.:) )

When Romo and Strahan both say that the games between the Cowboys and Giants were the toughest games they played all year, THAT gets me pumped for the matchups this year in a way that makes whatever gameweek trash talk there may be look foolish in comparison.

There's more than one reason to get pumped for a game. And Patrick Crayton isn't a clown.

All y'all (not singling you out, percy) can talk mess about our players who over-deliver because you don't like the few comments they make in the media if you want to. That doesn't mean you're keeping it real or holding anybody to a higher standard. It makes our fans look petulant and unappreciative. If Crayton said a small fraction of what's said about him regularly on this board about another player in the media, then maybe you'd have a point. The reality is he made a few optimistic comments about his team and ended up with egg on his face. Big deal.

Axxx (Sxxx, XX): What did you think of the T.O. contract extension?

sn2.gif
Patrick Crayton : (12:46 PM ET ) Loved it. LOVED IT. Glad the Cowboys gave it to him. He's a big piece. I want to get a ring as much as he wants one. It's about that time.

************

Uh oh... looks like Crayton is talking junk again. Talking about it being time for s superbowl. Honestly, I love confidence and WRs (and CBs) need it. Save the quite confidence for everyone else.

Sxxxx (Lxxxxxx): How much fun is it practicing and playing with such a good offense?

sn2.gif
Patrick Crayton : (12:53 PM ET ) Oh, a lot of fun. Lot of fun. As a WR, you have to be alert. You almost expect the ball every play. You might not think it's coming to you, but you better run the route just in case. That's when it comes to you a lot of the times.

**************

Ok... I laughed at this one. Lol.
