Okay, I just got off the phone with Rich. The reason they haven't called is because Zakary got pneumonia from being on the ventilator. The prognosis of that is good.

A local biker gang has made some flyers to distribute around town. They are going to try and get me one. I will scan it and post it if I get my hands on one.

The muscle biopsy results are not due until late next week. As soon as I know anything on that I will post it.

Tomorrow after church I am going to the hospital to pray with Rich, and if possible I will try and see the baby. I will let you all know how that goes and if there is any other news.

Again, thank you all for the thoughts and prayers for this baby. These are really good people.

Update...4/15/07

I went to he hospital to pray with Rich and I got to see Zakary. You can tell he's a fighter. He's a beautiful little boy with big blue eyes and long eyelashes and black hair. He has tubes and monitors all over. He's fed through a tube, he has a catheter, and he's on a ventilator. He can't move at all and they aren't allowed to hold him because of all the medical measures being taken for him. He's very patient with the Pediatric ICU nurses. Talk about angels of mercy, those kinds of nurses are the real deal.

They are expecting the biopsy on Zakary's muscles back Tuesday or Wednesday. At that time they will know if this is that horrible disease or not. There is some hope that this is a type of infant botulism, but Rich and Wendy have been told that there isn't a lot of hope for that.

Rich asked me to thank all of you for the prayers and thoughts. He and I prayed together that the Doctors and Nurses would be inspired to do all they can to find out what will help Zakary.

If I get more news I will share it. I don't expect any until that biopsy comes back.

Some good news on this. Yesterday they lowered the level on the ventilator from 9 down to 6, and then down to 3. They were to keep him on 3 through the night. Sometime today they are going to try and take him off the ventilator and see if he can breathe on his own.

This won't make the diagnosis any easier, but it may mean that at some point, even if he does have that disease that he can go home for a time.

It isn't much, but I'll take it.

I work for a such a cool company. The girls who work downstairs had a tiny little refrigerator for their lunches. I had told someone here that I had a 14 cubic foot frost free taking up space in my storeroom, so a couple of them asked me about it. I said they could have it.

So, Friday I brought it with me to work and set it up for them. Later one of them gave me 50 bucks for it. I told them they could have it and didn't need to pay me. The stupid thing was just taking up space and hasn't been used in like 3 years. They insisted.

Well, I honestly didn't feel that money was mine. So Sunday I gave it to Rich and told him I didn't care how they used it. I felt that the lady who gave it to me should know what I did with it. She told the rest of the girls who will use the fridge.

Kelly, the owner's sister and in charge of downstairs just came and asked me if the company could do a donation drive for Zakary and would I give them the money. I said of course.

So, they're making a donation bucket for him right now and putting a note in all of this week's paychecks with his story. What a great group of people to do that for someone they don't even know.

Had to share that.

Anytime a crisis occurs with one of our people, we send several manila envelopes throughout the entire building with a note explaining who the collection is for and the reason for the collection. When I had my facial reconstruction last year, my co-workers collected $75.00 and gave it to me.

A woman that I work with had 2 grandsons born with SCIDS (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome--body can't fight off infections). We had 50/50 drawings, quilt raffles, bake sales, you name it. We raised over $4000.00 to help offset expenses for the parents of the 2 boys (tragically, one of the boys lost his battle with SCIDS).

There are still a lot of good people out there. Focus on them. Not the antisocial wackos.

Kudos to both of your companies.

And a note for everyone to think about..."when a gift is unexpected, that is when it can matter the most to someone".

People are usually beautiful when giving the chance to be... but of course the reverse can be said also... and I think that it is that fickelness which makes us human and both dangerous & lovely all at the same time.

It is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type 1, and it will be fatal. They are trying to determine how much time he has left.

Rich asked me to thank all of you for the thoughts and prayers. I will keep this updated as I learn more.

Hos do not know if this helps but here is a website with info and support groups etc from other people and families dealing with this disease.

http://www.fsma.org/booklet.shtml#whatis

I know from personal experience sometimes it helps talking to other couples that have dealt with and struggled with the same issues. I have a daughter with Autism and sometimes talking with others can help you with those decision and struggles they will be going through.

I will continue my prayers
