Patrick Crayton lost two jobs earlier this month.

He's about to get one back.

Return specialist Allen Rossum will miss Sunday's game against Seattle and will likely be out longer with a pulled hamstring. That means Crayton will resume his role as the team's primary punt returner.

Rossum was signed to upgrade the return game; especially punt returns. But he was injured the first time he touched the ball for the Cowboys on a kickoff return against Atlanta and was done for the day. Crayton returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown _ the longest of his career _ in Rossum's absence.

Felix Jones volunteered to return kickoffs after Rossum was hurt but didn't get a chance. Both of the Falcons kicks after the first quarter were touchbacks.

Miles Austin has also returned kickoffs this season, but the Cowboys would prefer that not continue with his increased role in the Cowboys offense at receiver.

No reason to keep him around if he is going to be out an extended period of time. He isn't that good of a returner to occupy a roster spot when he isn't contributing.
He was one of the best in the league last season.

"Give him an injury settlement and let him go. Activate J-Will, CuJo, or Ogletree if they've been inactive"

...............exactly...that makes too much sense I guess.......

It actually wouldn't make any sense at all. Releasing Rossum wouldn't change any of the other three status in games.

I wouldn't give up on Rossum just yet
I think these are the same guys who wanted to get rid of Austin, hated the Mike Jenkins pick, etc etc.

i agree with that, but he can show crayton techniques that wrs have used on him and that worked, etc

Oh, my goodness.

Can anyone think of any other "one and done" Cowboys? I can't. Still can't figure out how he pulled a hammy by getting hit straight-on.

What? You didn't realize Crayton was running around the field aimlessly most of the time? I mean our DBs have never been on the level of an Alan Rossum, they certainly can't teach our green WR any techniques!! Rossum is a savior.

PS. I agree... A simple, "oops my bad" would have sufficed.

Rossum was a CB by position but never really played it. He was a KR/PR specialist his whole career.

Rossum has 2 career sacks and 2 career interceptions. That should be good enough for defensive player of the year like Bob Sanders.

yeah but what i liked is this; crayton said that rossum has helped him a ton on receiving punts, etc, returning etc, maybe this move has helped crayton with rossum tutoring him some for crayton to improve his punt returns

rossum might have even shown hiim something as far as playing wr too

oh, it's a good thing our coaching staff hadn't already done that then

Absolutely. The journeyman special teams player, who's never made a name for himself defensively clearly has secret tips that made Crayton Jerry Rice incarnate this past Sunday.

He really seems like a legit nice guy, but some of his posts are just so childish and naive sometimes.

Sometimes? How about all the time

who was receiving the kickoffs vs Atlanta since it wasn't Rossum,Felix or Stone Cold Miles Austin?

Tony Banks did not even get "one" before he was done.

As for Rossum, if you watched the game, he pulls his hamstring right before he gets hit, you can see him pull up almost to a standstill before he is hammered.

And for those that want to cut him, is there another FA that you covet? Otherwise why not deactivate him and keep him for the playoffs. It was unfortunate that he got injured but he is still a quality returner, who is even helping Crayton improve at that position. Having a playmaker in your back pocket is not a bad thing.

Felix was back on kick off returns after Rossum left the game. He fielded two in the endzone for touchbacks.
