Updated Consensus Board

I have found over the years that the combine distorts a lot of position rankings.

Overall I think that a pre combine look is better; this comes of looking at game tape not measurements
There are certain positions where there is a direct correlation between combine metrics and NFL success.

The tape is priority number 1 but athletics matters a lot.

It’s the most pure way to scout as we aren’t pry to the other info throughout the process

to an extent. Jerry Rice's measureless were not all that
Tom Brady's neither
Emmitt was not a great star as regards 40 time
those that rely on measureless over tape fail

wr luther burden,mizzou
de james pierce,tenn
dt kenneth grant,mich
cb ben morrison,nd

some "blinking lights" on that board.

Yup, always outliers but those are the exceptions not the norm.

You also sometimes get bigger WR's that 40 poorly, but are still incredibly athletic. Fitzgerald, Boldin and Dez come to mind.

I remember Fitzgerald's 40 being in 4.6's, but I'm seeing some of his combine listings being in 4.6's and some in the 4.4's. So I'm not sure whats real. Off of memory I do recall he had a slow 40

Jerry ran a 4.7.

the SMART GM looks at tape and looks at measurables and always gives the edge to tape

yeah three who are probably the best in their positions in the history of the NFL are not something to think about
Again, they’re outliers. If you pulled together a list of the top 20 WRs of all time a majority of those players will be above average athletes.

ABOVE AVERAGE.
Think on that
Who in College football that has made all conference is NOT above average?
And the great majority of them FAIL in the NFL.

Well your guy Jerry Rice 40 time was below average and you keep bringing him up.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at here…plus athletes are less risky draft picks and like I said you could look at the best players at just about every position a majority of the players are going to be stud athletes.

actually pure athletes are the worst draft risks. BECAUSE they are more athlete than player. TACO was drafted on athletic traits not game tape.
If you bother to look, find all those prospects called athletic freaks and you will find out the majority of them never did much because of that.

ANOTHER THING.

Look at past combine results and see what the top 40 players and the ones with the highest standing jump and the most bench presses did in the NFL.
at least half or more were never all that in the NFL

I never said to draft pure athletes that aren’t good players. I said the combine metrics have a direct correlation to success for certain positions which is a fact.

The safest pick is a plus athlete with
plus film.

Early in the draft we shouldn’t be drafting players that don’t need NFL thresholds for athleticism.

Taco Charlton was not drafted on athletic traits. His actual composite athletic testing metrics (ie. not his physical measurements) were mediocre at best:

I fear drafting "Scheme Fit" over the more athletic player. You draft better talent no matter if there is scheme fit. You worry about that problem in training camp.

Gil Brandt said they did not draft Mike Singletary because he was one half INCH under their minimum height requirements for a LB
that is where your fixation on numbers will lead you

the key word is PLAYER.
