Updated Defensive Statistics From NFL.com

Well, I will say that if they have another poor game tonight I will be concerned.

Not so much about their ranking, but it's they have just not passed the eye test, so far.

IMO, they really need to show up big tonight.

Some people don't want to recognize how bad our defense is. Pretty clear.

Yep.

I was just looking up the Pittsburgh Steelers, pretty shocking as well:

After having 16 Sacks last season, James Harrison only has 1 Sack in 3 games. The Pittsburgh Steelers Defense only has 1 interception and that was by Troy Polamalu, who isn't playing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are also 1-2.

In week 6 or so that plays, but the statistical sample sizes you are using to compare our team to the rest of the league is highly erroneous. I'd imagine there are more than a few folks here who took a stats class somewhere in their college years that can attest to the validity of my statement.

My engineering ears perked up - sample sizes!

Use the Ravens defense for example, they gave up close to 30 pts (24,26) each in the 1st 2 games they played, but then they just destroyed the Browns (34-3) and the Ravens defensive team stats look entirely different.

Points Allowed.......................27.0............ranks 26th in NFL

Rushing Yds Allowed...............135.5..........ranks 23rd in NFL

Passing Yds Allowed................303.0.........ranks 32nd in NFL

Total Yds Allowed..................438.5..........ranks 32nd in NFL

We are the worst team in the entire NFL against the pass and nobody has allowed as many yards from scrimmage as we have. (per game basis)

I never thought we would be the worst defense in the entire NFL.
What! How can that be? Roy Williams is in Cincinatti. I thought he was........ :laugh2:

Seriously, the defense needs to step up big time tonight.

When you use statistics in football, unless it's over the course of a year you really need to take into account context and use logical thinking. You can't really play the hard numbers game with statistics in week 2 or 3. You just can't.

So far, the numbers and the trend lead us to believe we're the worst defense in the league. But that trend is based off of 2 games. Sure, it does show that we've underperformed. But I don't think the few personnel losses from last year really has us playing as the 32nd ranked defense. I highly doubt and almost guarantee that our rating is completely different come week 8 or 9.

This reminds me of a debate I had with a fellow cowboys fan on another forum. Who insisted that the Giants wouldn't run all over us because they didn't manage much versus the Skins and at the time the Skins were the 21st ranked defense. My argument was that the Skins had played only 2 games and one of those games was AGAINST the Giants who helped put them in that 21st ranking slot.

You need to go by more than one or 2 times to really say how good or bad a defense is. You can't use stats to really show how bad we are at this point. You need logical thinking to do that. Logical thinking shows us that our defense is horrible thusfar. But let's see how it pans out before we assume we're in fact the worst in the league.

Our defense won't get any better all year. Two games are a guaranteed valid predictor of how it will be the rest of the season /"realist"

Wade will fix our defense. No doubt in my mind. /homer

I don't know what to think now.. Should I be a homer or a realist?

The Bucs ran over our defense and they couldnt even get 3 points against the Giants...PATHETIC!.

I'm pretty sure that everyone here, including the OP, is aware that we've only played two games, that you can't prove anything with such a limited sample size/ low degrees of freedom.

I'm pretty sure that almost everyone here understands that this illustrates quite well how poorly we've played THUS far.

And the above stats don't include some of our biggest worries -- 0 sacks, 0 interceptions, 0 fumble recoveries.

If this D were top 5 right with a ton of sacks and turnovers people would be fondling themselves over rankings.

Like dbair said, you cannot completely disregard these numbers.

They are what they are. Albeit early, the results thus far have been disgusting.

If Wade would have put this show on last season, I don't think a single person would expect him to be here right now.

I really don't care what anyone says about the validity of the stats, the defense has sure as hell played on par with those rankings.

The defense has been putrid up until now.

Zero sacks, Zero turnovers. Can't stop a nosebleed.
Exactly. No pass defense has been worse. You can't argue it even if we have played one game less...because the pass defense has been awful in both games.

As much as I don't like that image in my mind-- it's unfortunately true.

Everyone is talking about the statistical sample size that has the Cowboys ranked #32 defensively this year. Well, you can add last December if you want to increase the sample size -- but you won't like the results any better.

In fact, the premise of the rankings are valid whether you like them or not. The Cowboys defense so far this year has sucked. Can they turn this around...maybe, but they have not done anything "yet" to make me think it will change....

If the defensive ranking stays at #32 for much longer, then Wade should be fired immediately -- making him the first Cowboy coach fired during a season. A defensive ranking of 32 guarantees a losing season.

Your not suppose to take last year into account, when analyzing this defense.

At least, that is what I have been told.
