I felt entering the year the two positions we actually were weakest at were these 2.
After Dez we had no reliable outside WR and at safety we simply have two very mediocre players.
I think that bore out last night.
This team must address safety. On 4 of the last 6 plays for the Saints a Safety missed a tackle. That includes the long TD to end it as well as the long run to the 1 inch line just before the last TD. Our safety tackling in space is atrocious. The last line of defense can not reach out for flying arm tackles.
WR is a nuanced position. You need to study film and possess crazy physical tools and also rep like crazy to drill technique. It takes driven, rather insane folks to work. Dallas doesn't have that after Dez and Beasley. TWill is a talent but he can;t really catch, isn't really that strong and has moderate hands. The fact we went to him over and over tells you all you need to know about the other guys.
I honestly have no idea why Street made this roster. Butler surpassed him in 2 weeks.
I believe we will fine as a team with reinforcements quickly arriving but these two positions will remain a year-long drag on the team if not upgraded.
I'd be looking for help from teams with early season funks. Alshon Jeffery would immediately pass TWill here. Delvin Breaux can't single cover Jeffery. Maybe Steve Smith if Baltimore wants a youth movement. Maybe one of the 49ers WRs... there are lots of guys who can play but simply walking out the leash for terrible teams.
Safety is a bit tougher. That may need to be an R1 or R2 draft pick.
