Watching the Pitt/NC bowl game and ESPN just reported that Urban Meyer is stepping down at Florida. Confirmed by Jeremy Foley, Florida AD.

He is preparing to take the reigns as the next great head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Jimmy Johnson Part 2.

He's stepping down for health reasons.

I'm not sure how anything about that is funny.

dont act like you never laugh when a friend falls down and busts his rump.....or there is an awesome crash in NASCAR...or whatever.

the high and mighty route is lame....especially when the comment was pretty darn funny.

Honestly, why would this be announced before the game if it isn't something serious?

It seems like Florida is trying to get the word out so they can get a good coach ...

Um, did anyone read the article? He went to the hospital for chest pains. Probably has to take a year or two and make sure he's in okay shape before he coaches again. Who knows, he may even need surgery.

Hopefully he's okay.

Hope he gets his health in check but being a gator fan I am sick right now because he means so much to the program and DC charlie strong has left and he would have been the likely choice

My UF fan roommate said he has a brain tumor or a cyst on his brain, something along those lines. Not sure if that's accurate.

This sucks for Urban, the Gators, and college football. Hopefully he will be able to conquer these ailments and move on to live a healthy remainder of his life.

BTW, I don't like why he is leaving, but I am glad that he is leaving. ** now has to scramble to get a coach.......Charlie Weis is availabe.

I know everybody drags out Stoops every time there is a coaching vacancy but this time, I think that there is at least a chance that Stoops could be the guy. He has turned down every other opportunity and last time the job at Florida came open, Stoops was interested. However, that was 5 years ago and Stoops was coming off of 5 seasons where he was a combined 60 and 7. He was not seeing the same kind of pressure with Texas or winning bowl games. He was not seeing nearly as much pressure from the OU fan base either.

Florida is one of the few programs that might be a better opportunity then OU, recruiting wise. Remember too that Stoops came from Florida before accepting the OU job. He was the DC from 96-98. He runs a very similar offense, he's a guy that would come in and have a chance to hold Florida's recruiting class and maybe even strengthen it if he can bring a few players with him. He would provide an opportunity for Florida to reach into Texas and recruit players in addition to the wealth of talent in Florida. Florida could pay him the same kind of dollars or even more. I believe that Florida has to bring in a very high profile coach if they want to hold the advantage they currently have in the SEC. Bama is only going to get stronger under Saban. Florida State has a new incoming coach and they will almost certainly improve. Miami is up and coming under Shannon. LSU has been down but will be much improved in the next couple of years under Miles. Auburn is going to get better as well. I just think Florida has to get somebody who is high profile and is a top notch recruiter.

Stoops would be an interesting choice.

That is kind of dumb of Urban to announce it at this time.

Why?

Bad, bad timing.

Surely, Jerra would not unnecessarily fire Wade with two games to go or even with one.

Why would Urban Oscar Meyer Weenie want to have speculation swirling around and up to and during the bowl game?
This is really dumb of him.

He probably just got the test results back....informed the university, his staff, and players. I am sure he did it now, so that they could let the nation know there will be an opening as soon as the bowl game is over.

now his team can win one for the Gipper

No he's not coming here, and this was already posted and moved to a different thread.

Thanks for the info though.

I don't see it either, but was just asking. It doesn't make ANY sense to claim to retire because of stress from a college job to take on a PRO job...

Pro job is probably 10 times as stressful
