Don't like the waste area setup instead of deep rough. Not for a US Open. Kaymer just missed a fairway by 20 yards and got a decent lie and hit a 200 yard shot to 5 feet for eagle. He should have been hacking out of 6" deep rough.
The fairways were also too wide, I believe during the fourth round the announcers said that they were hitting fairways at a higher % than during normal tournaments. Now we also get Fox covering the Open for the next 12 freaking years.Agreed.
The reward/penalty is too random. His shot that you reference, while terrific, was one of many that had really decent lies, and could be aggressively played. It created a tournament essentially of chipping and putting, since the greens were so penal. I actually was tired of the predictable routine by Sunday, and that hasn't happened to me before. Will watch a day or two of the ladies and see how they handle it.
But look at the Masters -- also no rough, and a great short game test. The difference is that there is more water in play, creating a more dramatic risk/reward scenario on many of the holes. And Augusta's green have more variation, more personality. Much better tournament to watch.
