Brazils depth helped them too.

I thought USA did really well. Especially when you consider we beat Spain and almost beat Brazil.

2 teams that we really don't have any business being in the same match with anyways and we almost won the cup.

Now that I've mindlessly watched many games of a sport that I don't fully understand, can someone please "splain" to me about all of this red/yellow card stuff and how it effects the game. I'm sure it would enhance the experience if I knew what the heck was going on.

Also, I thought the games ended in 90 minutes, but was obviously mistaken. Where are the soccer fanatics at????

those cards are giving when a player commits a serious enough foul to warrant one... A red card means the player is booted from the game...2 yellows equal red...

the game has extra minutes added to the end... to make up for all the time the ball wasn't in motion during regulation.

I'm not really the one who should be answering these while I have to ask myself questions of my sons once in awhile.

firstly the cards. if a player receives a red card then he is dismissed from the field of play and cannot be replaced thus leaving his team with only ten players. red cards are usualy given for violent conduct, particularly dangerous challenges (ie studs showing or elbow to the head) or "a proffesional foul" which basically means preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. yellow cards are given for pettier offences and as zaxor said if you receive two of these then that equates to a red card and you are dismissed.
the 90 minute thing zaxor was actually incorrect time isn't added for when the ball is not in motion as things like free kicks, goal kicks and throw ins do not have time added to the game (unless a player is deemed to be time wasting in which case he will be booked-yellow carded). basically a game is two halfs of 45 minutes however injury or stoppage time is added at the end of each half at the discretion of the referee for things like injuries or time wasting.

anyway regarding the game tonight i thought you were very unlucky. obviously fans of U.S. soccer will be gutted but they should also be very proud as theres not many teams will beat spain and give brazil such a hard game.

what happens if they tie?

if it had finished a draw then there would have been two 15 minute periods of extra time to try and determine a winner. if it had still been level at that point then there would have been a penalty shoot out. a penalty shoot out involves teams taking kicks from the penalty spot which is twelve yards out from the centre of the goal. each team has five penalties which are taken alternately ie U.S. then brazil then U.S. etc and each one must be taken by a different player. if at the end of that it is still level then you enter sudden death where the teams continue taking alternate penalties until one team is in front after both have taken the same number of kicks at which point they are declared the winner.

so stupid. they diddnt quit, brasil are just better.
Maybe you and/or daschoo could answer this question for me. I know Brazil is the more talented team. They seemed to have offense coming out the arse. It felt like they were just punishing the US.

But I also noticed (or thought I noticed) a difference in the way the two teams played defense. When the US had the ball in the offensive 3rd, Brazil was challenging every man on the ball. When Brazil had the ball in the offensive 3rd, the US seemed to be sitting back a bit and waiting for Brazil to make a move before making a play on the ball. They packed 8-9 men in the box and let brazil come to them. Is that normal?

I don't have a problem doing that when you're up two goals in the last 10-15 minutes, but it seemed like they played that way the whole game. I don't know... I may be imagining things. But it seems like if you give Brazil enough chances at unchallenged crosses, you're going to get burned. If Thomas hadn't made a handful of great saves, Brazil could have netted 7 goals. It was the US was playing not to lose after going up by 2, instead of playing to win the game.

just a different strategy. you guys were sitting back and packing the defence to try and make it difficult for them to score by denying them time and space in and around the box. this tactic is usualy employed by teams when they come up against a team who are better than they are. in fairness it very nearly worked as one goal came from a touch of class outside of the box and another came from a set piece.

Our boys just aren't in the same league as Brazil... but I am real proud of them... it took a tremendous amount of energy and heart to play at the pace they were playing with...see when you are not as technically skilled & talented as the opposing team you have to make up for it in hustle... and hustle they did... or this game wouldn't have been even close.

daschoo answered your question perfectly. its a matter of tactics from the manager, it worked against spain and so nearly worked against brasil.
